All welcome, the vibe is frugal life to make the things that matter possible, which is different for everyone, some of us have overcome debt, separations etc. All are friendly and we're sometimes chatty, sometimes quiet.

Snap on trousers Nellie. I’m currently looking and failing to find any.

I’ve helpfully lost my piece of paper with my spendings jotted down. I can remember £135 on next year’s holiday (hotel change - they’ve overcharged me so I’ll have to email them), £13.50 on a TGTG and 75p on a postcard. I’ve used my gift cards too - Asda, Sainsbury I think. Today has been a no spend day so far but am thinking of mince pies.

The zip on my weekend bag is broken so I’ve been looking for a bag. No luck so far.

So I still haven't properly caught up on the thread enough to reply or comment much but I will make a start with the latest page!
Happier Great cashback bonus.
Need have you switched to a fixed energy deal? I've stuck with standard tariff but not at all keen on BG so wondering whether it's worth switching
Rainbows that's great to get your professional subs reduced, every saving helps.
Em I'm still going to and fro with travel insurance claim after ds was "stranded" (using "" as it was Barbados so stranded is a bit of a stretch imho!). BA took about 6 weeks to repay his expenses. Glad chemo is underway for you and thinking of you.

Very strange here as ds & dd have both moved out in less than 2 weeks of each other. Dd will be back for uni hols but then away for 12 months abroad so in all honesty I don't expect either of them to come back for good. They are at opposite ends of the country but both good areas to visit so dh & I are plotting trips this side of Christmas. The house is very quiet & feels empty, but the food stocks are stable, energy and water usage down dramatically and we seem to have more time to do stuff like the big declutter we've started. So overall focussing on the positives.

Because of all the upheaval we knew about, we booked a sunny week away from this Saturday. In reality that is what's tipped our finances over the edge slightly but we are soooo looking forward to it. Have ordered a gousto box for when we get back as they had sent me a 50% code. It works out at £35 and will give us lunches & main meals for nearly a whole week. Our food spending, energy and water bills should be much lower and we both have pay rises (with back pay) to come so I'm hoping to build up a bit of a war chest in our offset mortgage savings account. Ds owes us some money we lent to tide him over the move and until first payday, but from then on he will be earning decent money so I expect him to pay us back & don't expect him to be asking for any more.

Dh & I are going to sit down & make some plans for the house over the winter. Jobs that we can do for minimal expense. My ideas so far:

  • Declutter
  • Prep & paint conservatory
  • Prep & paint kitchen
  • Paint pine bedroom furniture in our room
  • Source second hand curtains for our room & new bedding
  • Work on unfinished quilting projects (there are several!)
  • Update photographs that are on display (just had a discount code for 40% off at snapfish)
I've been listening to Frugal Queen in France a lot lately and finds it really grounds me re money, spending, food etc. I have already spoken to dh about doing a budget every month as well as for the whole year. Things have run away with us this year and I don't want that to happen again.

Sorry for the very long post!

lifelongfrugaleer · 17/09/2024 19:12

I feel your pain life

kessiebird · 17/09/2024 22:28

I lost track from Friday to Monday but haven't had that much time to spend so not too bad...
£3.78 MacDonald on way to school event for DD
£0.65 Morrisons
£10 cash out for school raffle which didn't run so I will keep that instead

Sorry completely lost track of the thread but will try to keep up now!

2024Hackathon · 17/09/2024 22:41

Payday for DH tomorrow.

He's recovering nicely from the post-procedure complications but I won't be at ease until the last issues have been fully investigated and resolved if possible.

He ordered a gadget more than 2 weeks ago which he hasn't used. After a discussion, he's agreed to send it back which means he'll have a refund for that which will nicely pay for the hotel stay earlier this month. (He wasn't using it and hadn't even unboxed it. He agreed that if he hadn't done that by now, then he wasn't going to. It was an easier conversation than I'd anticipated.)

lifelongfrugaleer · 18/09/2024 05:42

That’s good hack. Both on the recovery and the return

kessiebird · 18/09/2024 21:15

Good news about the recovery and return hack
I've done a return for a smart watch I got last week. Didn't gel with it. The one I had previously is £8 cheaper. It was really good until the strap snapped, think I fastened it too tight...

Today has been LSD as another long one at work (our busiest month). £11.37 Lidl. £11.25 parking as I needed car for a meeting so couldn't bus in. I have a sundries account with a fund for costs like today.

lifelongfrugaleer · 19/09/2024 06:41

Can you get a new strap for yours kessie.

I think I’m going to foood shop on a wed or thurs £41 Aldi &26 I eland

will have to go back and get Sunday diner stuff, when I’ve worked out what we are eating

ememem84 · 19/09/2024 08:04

Spends yesterday. £3 coffee out out.

I also had my hair cut. So said goodbye to my under boob length hair and now have a just below chin length wavy bob.

the chemo shed had started so it was time.

the ball of hair is what came out on Monday after a brush. The ponytail is held by my hair dresser.

she also didn’t charge me. Which I felt a bit 😢🥰 about. She said I’m going through enough losing my hair without having to pay for it. Angel.

Em I'm so sorry you're going through this, I remember photos of your hair with pink rinse in. It'll grow again most important thing is you get well. That was kind of your hairdresser.

Think of the fun with wigs though

Rainbow1901 · 19/09/2024 14:04

@ememem84 It's hard seeing the hair go but my DD and I had a fun morning trying on loads of hats as it was heading into Autumn and Winter in the local department store. My favourite was the 'Uncle Buck' Trapper Hat which actually belonged to my DH! He didn't mind me wearing it though!! 😅😘

needastrongoneagain · 19/09/2024 15:42

Afternoon.

Aww Em, poor you. My friend is 8 years post breast cancer and losing her hair was the hardest for her. It grew back curly initially after being absolutely straight, which she quite liked. It went straight again then!

An empty house feels

Thanks re the pass info life. Ouch to the spends.

I'm useless at returns hack, well done on getting DH to return his item.

north, I switched to a new tariff with Eon Next, our current provider. We are not quite out of contract yet but they let me anyway. It's fixed for a year and reflects lower pricing now, plus I know energy prices are risen and the world seems a tad unstable at present. It must feel weird with both DC gone. Mine only managed a short period both being a uni but then covid hit. I like your list.

We had a low spend weekend and it's not been so bad so far this week. Overspent on food as usual but underspent in other areas so not too bad.

Nothing else to report!

needastrongoneagain · 19/09/2024 15:43

Sorry, I'm on the phone and can't see what I'm typing too well. Sorry about the half sentence!!

2024Hackathon · 19/09/2024 17:00

This happened to my sister! She's always been poker straight so quite enjoyed being curly like a lamb's fleece for a while before reverting to straight again.

I'm useless at returns hack, well done on getting DH to return his item.

I was likewise pleased that DH listened and then followed through. We're still to have the budget conversation but I welcome even tiny shoots of financial cooperation and understanding like this.

RumBananaSundae · 19/09/2024 18:48

Glad your husband is recovering Hack and also about the return.

Sending a hug your way em.

Have lost track a bit with spending. It’s been £5.70 on groceries on gift cards and £9.58 not on gift cards. I also bought some euros for my trip about £250 worth I think. Emailed solicitor today and it feels a bit like the point of no return so am looking forward to a few days away and have some good places booked.

I didn’t buy a new weekend bag. Apparently you can have the zips replaced so I will look into that when I get back.

ememem84 · 19/09/2024 20:23

Thanks team. It sucks. I keep telling myself it’s only hair. And it’s only temporary. But it’s like it’s tbe first visible sign of being poorly. If that makes sense. It’s like I have to admit it to myself that this is actually happening. and I hate that.

I’ve had a cry. I’ve had a moan. I feel a little better for it. I know it’s ok to be sad. It’s like a grief process.
