How much for gas & electric pcm?!

Shleepymummy · 11/07/2024 21:33

Maybe I’m just blind to the rising costs but my energy company want to increase our monthly payments from £188 to £191 pcm to cover bills and a further £59 pcm to help reduce debt so we aren’t too deep in the negative next winter. I need to do a meter read in the hope that will help a bit butttt I doubt it.
So- are we using a stupid amount of energy?! 4 bed house, standard size I’d say, built 1991. Heating on in winter but on a timer so not all time. Summer obvs not on. 2 adult showers a day, one bath for kids but try and keep it shallow. Don’t have lights on really cos of day light. Yes we watch tv and use internet but no one working from home. dishwasher once a day, washing machine once a day sometimes twice, tumble dryer used but not every day.
We’ve obviously got some debt hence the £59 payment but £191 a month, is that right?!

I live in a 2 bed flat (two adults and one young child). Ours is £78 pcm.
Yours sounds about right based on how much we pay and the usage you've described.

fghbvh · 11/07/2024 21:37

Sorry can't edit - £88

ChefsKisser · 11/07/2024 21:39

Ours is £175 a month year round, building a surplus in summer then spending that over winter. Our useage sounds similar to yours so doesn’t seem too crazy if you’ve got a debt to pay back.

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 11/07/2024 21:39

4 bed semi, £227 a month. It's a killer. I miss the old days when you could switch each year and it would be around £80 a month.

We live in oodies in winter, don't use the tumble dryer unless absolutely necessary, nothing spectacular, it's just expensive!

GoneIsAnotherSummersDay · 11/07/2024 21:40

Mine's £120pcm. Although I feel as though the gas should be most of that as it's our heating, hot water and hob, I've been amazed to find that 2/3 our overall bill is down to electricity. It means our bills don't actually fall that much in the summer as all the appliances are still running and lights, computers etc in use. It's only one adult one child here so your bill sounds about right.

DelilahBucket · 11/07/2024 21:41

You shouldn't have any debt at this point, you should be building up credit, so you've clearly been underpaying. What you're being asked to pay doesn't seem unreasonable for your house size. Big energy users apart from heating are oven usage, tumble dryers and washing machines, dishwashers, old appliances. Is your house well insulated? Windows and doors firmly recently resealed? Good curtains/blinds. Prepare for winter now because of we have a harsh one this time round that bill isn't going to get any lower.

Pleaseleavemealone0 · 11/07/2024 21:41

4 bed, 1930s semi and £140 a month will hopefully mean I don't go into debt over the winter. I did fix in March yo get a reasonable deal.

JustPleachy · 11/07/2024 21:43

Sounds about right. We’re a 5 bed largish new build, so big but well insulated. £230 per month year round. Includes all car charging, but we have solar so I think that pretty much balances out.

Shleepymummy · 11/07/2024 21:43

Thanks all, guess it’s all about right then. Christ. I used to live in a flat in 2019 and I paid £20pcm heating and £20 electric 😂😂 I get this is a bigger property but what the hell happened!!

dementedpixie · 11/07/2024 21:44

In may we used about £170 worth of gas and electricity. Have just lowered my monthly payment from £200 as I'm in credit.

You'd need to look at your usage to see if the monthly payment is reasonable

The cost of gas and electricity has increased dramatically especially since the war in Ukraine started. It just reduced a bit at the start of July

SidekickSylvia · 11/07/2024 21:47

£580 per month, 2 adults and 4 teenagers who are always either in the bathroom or fridge. It's doubled since 2019. Large house built in 1958, so the insulation isn't great, and no gas to the village so we have oil delivered 5 times per year. One day they will leave home and we can buy a 2 bed bungalow, so we're just resigned to it for now.

CissOff · 11/07/2024 21:47

We currently pay almost £300 a month. £200 is towards usage and the remainder is to clear down some inexplicable debt (not really, but it was £400pcm for both over winter, sometime more 🙈).

luckily we are finally on a cheaper tariff so it’ll be cleared soon!

edited to add, 4 bed detached with 2 adults and 2 teens. We also have solar panels 🙈

Fixesplease · 11/07/2024 21:48

2 bed semi here.. I'm paying 200 quid a month.. only just got level in the last month.. and we have solar panels!
You're doing well on that price with debt. And a 4 bed tbh.

OhMehGoddess · 11/07/2024 21:53

Actual bill last month for both were £130. 3 bed semi.
Between 3-5 showers a day. Gas cooker, work from home some days. Multiple devices on a lot too and I run a large dehumidifier instead of a tumble drier when can't dry outside

Have boosted the heating a few times.

Gettingbysomehow · 11/07/2024 21:59

£80 a month for a three bed terrace. It's just me here and two csts and I am at work all day. I tend to relax on the sofa with my electric blanket on in the evening with my cats rather than turn the heating on unless it's really cold.
Both cats have heat pads on in their beds.

TammyJones · 12/07/2024 01:29

Our has gone up £100 per month since the energy crisis
So sounds about right
We do have economy 7 and solor panels so that helps.

Bjorkdidit · 12/07/2024 01:33

Have you seriously not noticed what's happened to the price of gas and electricity over the last 2 to 3 years? At some point it was all anyone seemed to talk about.

Prices are actually cheaper than they were about 18 months ago but the price cap rates are about 50% more than your 2019 benchmark and the standing charge has increased massively. You're also obviously in a much larger property since then, would this also be more people in the household?

But just under £200 pm sounds about right for your household and like a PP says you should be starting to build up credit not be in debt at this time of year otherwise your debt will just increase over winter.

Raveonette · 12/07/2024 01:36

2 adults home most of day and 2 DC, 4 bed 1930 semi. £170pm and we're slightly in credit.

BakewellGin1 · 12/07/2024 05:31

Bill just through the door yesterday is £408 for the quarter so happy with that.
3 bedroom older house but mid terraced

Musiclover234 · 12/07/2024 05:45

We currently pay £130 a month DD two of us in 3 bed semi. Low users. Should add we w build up credit over summer. Our summer bills currently are about £70 in worst months of winter we were over our DD. The amount changes due to prices fluctuating. So we then draw out some credit in spring.

I don’t think yours sounds excessively high tbh.

Musiclover234 · 12/07/2024 05:47

How did you miss all the attention this ruse got when COL starting getting worse and the government had to help us all out?? It was everywhere…. 😂

BananaHammock23 · 12/07/2024 05:55

£280 per month for a 4 bed semi, two adults two young kids. We work from home and I'm on mat leave so in all the them. It's so effing expensive.

LuckysDadsHat · 12/07/2024 05:57

3 bed semi and 225 a month.

Shleepymummy · 12/07/2024 06:23

I know of the problems and the increases in my bills…..I’m just surprised that they keep increasing. I was expecting things to level out at some point because it can’t just keep going up….
