How you all getting on with cost of living crisis?

Energy bills, Im a low user, only pay £75 a month direct debit year round. Got efficient fridge freezer, use eco wash mode on washing machine at 20c, only heat one room in winter, and sometimes the bedroom when very cold. Rest of house gets to same temp as outside in winter. Use water saving shower head to reduce energy usage for shower. Turned boiler temp down and added draft excluders, got low energy lights and house is EPC rating C, not too badly insulated.

Cancelled TV licence. TV is crap anyway

Its the mortgage that worries me, fix ends in 2025 costs will jump loads. Had to take a 35 year mortgage so cant extend to afford house and Id otherwise be stuck in renting.

Council tax band B

Have cheap broadband. Have a cheap runaround car with low insurance rating and not too bad on fuel.

Been bulk buying food and using asda just essentials but food costs are a bit crippling

Havent been on a holiday abroad in 12 years too expensive

And yet despite doing everything on the Money saving expert site I feel I do everything I dont have much money left for anything fun since the start of the cost of living crisis and it sucks.

Yay inflation is nearing 2% but I still cant afford to do anything our government can fuck off.

Which fridge freezer do you have as I need to buy a new one

Karen30572 · 25/05/2024 11:32

@OneLemonOrca its a 'candy' one from currys but when you come to buy one look at the Kwh usage/energy rating as if you are replacing an appliance you can save money on your electric bills long term

I feel like I am hyperfocused on saving money which is neccessary to stop me getting in to debt because I am low income I have no debt but it means life isnt fun anymore

It's so dull isn't it

Bushwhacked20 · 25/05/2024 13:06

It's sheer drudgery, and every day I resent that waste of space Truss and her little pet Kwasi for having made an already bad situation ten times worse.

I am exhausted from the day job and still have to do a second job just to make ends meet and I am still hundreds of pounds overdrawn every month.

I despise what this country has become and wish I was still young enough to emigrate.

There is no joy left in life at all and while I wouldn't take steps to end my own life while I'm still reasonably healthy I am really questioning the point of it.

DesperateDelia · 25/05/2024 13:59

@Bushwhacked20 agree💯 percent.

Karen30572 · 25/05/2024 14:47

Yep its rubbish isnt it

I sometimes think of emigrating but what country would I emigrate to? Any suggestions?

It’s a relentless struggle and soul destroying all

We are doing ok but we are price comparing absolutely everything and rationing snacks etc.

I used to love a nice steak or piece of lamb or chicken Kiev but now we mainly cook things that you can bulk out such as Chilis and Bolognese. The price of fish is outrageous! Own brand cereal and tins all the way.

We also hardly heat in the winter but it is difficult when it’s so cold.
