Should my UC statement say something about housing costs

Hi all, wondering if someone who understands UC could help. We have recently migrated from tax credits. Yesterday we had an appointment to confirm savings, assets etc. Our savings and current accounts are currently on the edge of threshold for the upper limit, or we have just under 16000 although this includes current accounts and so not all savings, as the money includes what is spent throughout the month on everyday spending. After going through everything and having to redeclare housing costs I finally got a statement saying we are entitled to just over £14 for the month. Then today I got letter saying we are entitled to 486 for transition protection due to the difference in the benefits we used to receive compared to universal credit. I'm confused as the breakdown of entitlements and deductions does not say anything about housing costs although I confirmed those yesterday. We pay almost 500 per month rent to a housing association. I have never been paid housing benefit before so don't know whether the statement should come include something about housing. I know not necessarily get anything towards housing but was having read all the info on the app it does say that there should be some mention about housing. Any help gratefully received. Thanks

It sometimes takes a few days for your housing association to confirm your rent. Once they have, the housing cost will be added to your statement. You receive your UC payment before your housing costs are verified, you'll receive the housing costs as an additional payment the day they're verified. Its worth chasing up your housing association to confirm with UC x

Thanks for your reply. I'll wait a few days and see if there's any change.

Why would you need UC of you have just under 16k in savings?

Gingerkittykat · 22/05/2024 19:20

Leave a note under payments marked urgent and ask for your housing costs to be added.

I'm assuming you have already sent proof of tenancy to them.

Money that has been received in the last month ie benefits and wages is not included in your savings. Say you received £1000 in wages just before your AP ends then that will not be included as savings till next month.

Why shouldn't we, I have declared everything and UC have made their decision, I'm not hiding anything. I don't make the rules up, we have been entitled to tax credits before, I work full time, my other half can't work due to being disabled, my son also has disabilities and will need help his entire life, we're not millionaires, we're just claiming what dwp says we are entitled to. There are plenty of people hiding money and trying to avoid paying tax, we're not, I'm just trying to make sure that what we're getting is what we should be, with no overpayment or underpayment, judt want to do things properly.

So should lower earners not be allowed to save from their thriftiness?

Or should only the wealthy be allowed some savings?

I agree. I am not a high earner and we are only a one income household. we live a thrifty lifestyle and I keep savings because I don't know what will happen in the future. We could have spent all our savings and got more from universal credit (money has been deducted because of our savings which I totally agree with). Majority of savings come from fact that my mam recently died and left me a small inheritance. Believe me I would far rather have my mam alive and well and free from dementia, but at least she left a small legacy for me andy sibling for which I am so grateful
