Does my Octopus elec/gas bill look OK for a 3 bed terrace?

Just received my last Octopus monthly bill and I am paying:

  • £47 electricity
  • £88 for gas (central eating and gas cooker). Reduced from about £138 for Dec and Jan.

Does that sound all right to people? This is a 3 bed 1930 mid terrace & I work from home.

I don't pay Octopus by direct debit (because I am concerned about them just taking some random amounts. So they give me the latest meter reading and I pay the bill electronically every month which I know makes things a bit more expensive.

As ways to reduce the bills they suggest on my gas account: ''You could save £32.79 a year by switching to Flexible Octopus and paying by Direct Debit. Alternatively, you could save £136.42 a year by switching to Loyal Octopus 12M Fixed.''

is anyone on the above tariff and is it worth moving to that?

People can't answer that as they could live differently. Some may have the heating on 25 degrees 24/7 and have 8 showers or baths a day. Others may put the heating on 15 for 2 hours a day and have a shower or bath once a week.

Just compare the unit price and the standing charge and see if you can save that way.

Just DH and myself and both WFH. I'm with octopus and the average is £190 per month (£100 electric and £90 gas), but I think that is based on the winter usage. We do have a gas aga though, but its only on for 5/6mths of the year.
I'm DD and never had an issue getting a refund online from overpayments, changing the tariff per month up/down etc.
Your charges seem good OP!

I'm paying £160/month year round DD for our 3 bedder Victorian end of terrace - so you paying £135 for the month of February, when it's cold, sounds great.

Blobfishy · 20/03/2024 19:01

We are paying £125 (Octopus) currently for our 3 bed mid terrace

OldTinHat · 20/03/2024 19:08

I'm on Eon Pledge Tracker.

Electric - 27.86p p/kWh
Standing charge - 49.97p a day

Gas - 7.30p p/kWh
Standing charge - 29.60p a day

I've had an email to say this will reduce next month.

3 bed terrace, pay £60 direct debit, currently £292.65 in credit (having withdrawn several hundred back because my credit was huge).

Mine is £350 a month on a four bed semi. So I would say that's very reasonable.

Songbird54321 · 20/03/2024 20:36

I'm on octopus 12 month fixed in a 3 bed semi. We pay about £150 a month DD.
Our last bill was £100 gas and £60 electric so slightly over but we're £300 in credit and it's warming up now so will be back to well under the DD amount by end of summer.
We have 2 bathrooms and the showers run off the boiler so a lot of our gas bill is down to this (I am guilty of a long shower, only peace I get).
We've always fixed as I need to know what's going out every month.

We pay £350 but recently the cost is £500 for dual fuel - six teens/adults who won't bloody leave and think paying 'rent' covers everything ever. The ones that do. That's another thread. Electric car, gas heating, washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer on all the bloody time. No they won't eat together, no they won't help, yes I hate my life.

OneFrenchEgg · 20/03/2024 20:41

^^ sorry. But I feel better.

Wingingitbestican · 21/03/2024 23:24

We are with octopus and only a few weeks ago changed tariff from flexible to the tracker. At the moment it’s about a third cheaper (not including the daily standing change). Not sure what we will do after the price cap changes in April though.
