Council Tax Support

Rob1966 · 11/03/2024 16:03

Hi
I am currently on Universal Credit (been on it 7 months)
I have today just received my Council Tax Bill for this year and it’s the full amount (no council tax reduction)
is this normal? Will it be automatically adjusted over the next week or so to take into account I am on Universal Credit or do I have to inform somebody each year?

thanks in advance

Pretty sure you have to apply for a reduction directly to the council. Just because you get UC doesn't automatically mean you're eligible for a reduction though.

You need to let them know.

Bromptotoo · 11/03/2024 18:05

The council tax reduction scheme for low income is run by the Council. You need to Check their website or phone and ask what they need.

You need to apply for the council tax payment separately.

I applied online via my councils website and then they sent me an updated council tax bill

Sweetladyjane · 11/03/2024 18:09

Council tax reduction is separate from UC so you have to apply directly to your council. There’s normally an online form you fill in on their website.

To clarify received the Council Tax support last year when I went on to Universal Credit as I applied for it
I’m just unsure of whether it continues on as an open case or whether I have to reapply every year for it?

@Rob1966 mine just carried on automatically this year

Mauvepink · 13/03/2024 12:50

@Rob1966 Mine also just carries on automatically. The only reason I would think it would stop is if they checked your benefit entitlement and it means you were no longer entitled to Council Tax Support or a less amount. I would call the council, most likely a mistake with your bill they have sent

They are two different organisations, one is council and one is DWP government department

each council will run their council tax relief slightly differently, so what and how my council run our CTR will be different from your council / thus it might be difficult to get all the answers to your questions correct unless you live in the same area as another poster
