How much do you have in savings?

Husband and I have a small emergency pot but need new cars and worried we’ll be left with almost no savings. How much do you have in savings?

Enough to pay the kids' university accommodation, plus a buffer for house repairs. Anything else has been stuffed rather desperately into pension catch-up.

ilikeeggs · 08/03/2024 15:38

3.5k but soon to all go on house buying costs.

pbdr · 08/03/2024 15:45

Somewhere in the region of £70k, although about 3/4 of that is in stocks and shares and the remainder in cash.

PSEnny · 08/03/2024 15:46

I have 40K and another 8K that is for work that is needed on the house, I’m a saver. It’s only me and my DD, if I lose my job or have an accident I can’t risk not having enough money to tide us over. It sounds a bit paranoid but I’m too risk averse not to have a decent amount in the bank. This has all come from saving, no inheritance etc.

About £400 in my instant access account, and about £4k in premium bonds for bigger expenses (boiler/car needing replacing, roof starting to leak, redundancy or equivalent)

Bit depressing really.

You've twice as much as us. That's depressing 😞

Clearinguptheclutter · 08/03/2024 15:53

Quite a lot but we have an offset mortgage so we rely on the savings to pay negligible interest on our mortgage. We have a bit (but not loads) less than we owe. So while it’s there we don’t dip into it.

RagzRebooted · 08/03/2024 16:00

£15k in a LISA as hoping to buy a house in a few years. £3k CC debt though, but that should be cleared in 6 months and there's no interest to pay at the moment (car issues and changing jobs over Christmas so we came unstuck briefly!).

SallyWD · 08/03/2024 16:06

Together DH and I have about £20,000 but we're constantly dipping in to it because of the high cost of living. We also have some major house repairs coming up that will take more than half of this.

SailingStormyWaters · 08/03/2024 16:09

I have worked my absolute butt off and now have the most savings I've ever had.
I am a lone parent and this is a priority.

ohthejoys21 · 08/03/2024 16:10

I have 30k squirrelled away in an account separate to our joint one. Dh knows.. I guess i'm lucky I don't need it for bills, just to save as my kids in first jobs and always need topping up.

Parky04 · 08/03/2024 16:11

£100,000 in Premium bonds, £30,000 in ISA, and £10,000 in a bank account. We inherited £150k around 10 years ago and haven't spent much of it!

Blanketpolicy · 08/03/2024 16:18

More that a bit and less than enough.

GoldenCrab · 08/03/2024 16:21

17k but took years for me to save that as a single parent and privately renting in london. Parents and siblings always help in emergeny situations so i dont need to touch it. About 3k worth of gold. Fuck all else 😂

WhamBamThankU · 08/03/2024 16:25

I have £3k in a LISA but it's taken me 3.5 years to save.

Moltenpink · 08/03/2024 16:40

RickyB · 08/03/2024 14:49

Honestly, it baffles me that people DON'T own gold.
Governments around the world are simply typing numbers into computers to 'create' money.

Do you mean owning physical gold, or investing in it? Just curious!

EndofDaze · 08/03/2024 16:43

Mortgage paid. About £130k in premium bonds, ISAs and various high interest savings. But, I’m in my middle 50s so not many more years of work to build this further. Would like 150k by the time I retire in a couple of years.

2024namechange · 08/03/2024 16:46

Just shy of about £3k at the moment although I have £2k in an old private pension that I can’t touch until I’m 50.

£3k feels precariously low but we have just paid off a car and the finance on our bathroom in a big chunk so that’s where it has left us.

Now there are no repayments it should go up quite quickly as we should now be able to put away maybe £800-£1000/month

Babyroobs · 08/03/2024 16:47

7k. Saving to help my kids out but with four of them it's not going to go far !! Just seems impossible to save much right now.

macshoto · 08/03/2024 17:14

6 months gross salary in cash and short term investments and about 18 months in ISAs and equities.

Mortgage free so growing those numbers reasonably fast now. Given how low interest rates were, should probably have saved/invested more and delayed repaying the mortgage(s).

Zanatdy · 08/03/2024 17:17

40k but that’s my deposit for my own place that I only saved my living in a family members house whilst they were overseas (rent free). Single mum, only one left at home now and struggling to live in the south east so have to wait for youngest to go to Uni before I can buy. Once I’ve spent the deposit I’ll likely have a very small amount at a time

hulahoopqueen · 08/03/2024 17:18

We have enough saved to cover around 3 months' bills.

caringcarer · 08/03/2024 17:27

BouleDeSuif · 08/03/2024 12:19

£190.

I never have too much because each time it gets to £50k plus I buy another btl house using money as 25 percent deposit.

Badknitter · 08/03/2024 17:28

£30 in a deduct from net salary savings account

justtidying · 08/03/2024 17:32

I had 20k but last year there were some unforeseen circumstances.

I currently have 1k and am adding to it as much as I can, whenever I can.

Gettingonmygoat · 08/03/2024 17:38

More than i will ever need. Money in different pots for my Daughters escape fund, for my Grandchildren's driving lessons and a pot for a family holiday after i have died instead of a funeral.
