To save money

Hello I am thinking of cancelling TV licence to save money. I will unplug my TV's ariel so I cannot accidentally watch TV etc. I mainly watch YouTube and Netflix.

However, TV licencing says I need a licence if I watch live TV on YouTube - Do I need a TV Licence to watch or stream programmes online? - TV Licensing â„¢

I won't try to watch live TV on YouTube. I might sound stupid but how can I accidentally not watch a live TV channel or TV stream etc?

Also, seen lots on YouTube about harassment from TV licencing, has anyone experienced this?

We cancelled our TV license a month or 2 ago. We mainly watch Amazon Prime and Netflix. We haven't watched anything live. We did get a letter from the licensing department saying they may check we aren't watching live TV but no one has shown up at our door yet 😂

Thank for replying.

Only problem is Amazon prime and Netflix don't have live streams on do they?

I'm just scared of getting prosecuted over accidentally watching broadcast TV like Sky News live on YouTube or something like that.

I have an ariel but I will disconnect it from TV

I think they are bullies tbh. If you don't watch live TV you don't need a license. My adult son doesn't have one because he just watches Netflix. If he wants the live sport he comes to my house to watch it or goes to the pub.

Is it a case of I don't search for live TV like Sky News live etc on YouTube?

What happens if a visitor comes to the property and uses BBC iplayer on their phone?

Do you need a licence to listen to bbc radio?

SloppyFloppers · 16/02/2024 22:40

No, you don't @Notthrowingawaymyshot42 but you do to watch live tv on any platform including YouTube.

No one is answering my question....

I'm sure if you search sky news every so often wouldn't matter. I have no idea how they would even know!!

Nothing. Nothing will happen

leafybrew · 17/02/2024 06:03

How is Sky News connected to the BBC?

[missing the point maybe but curious]

Dontsparethehorses · 17/02/2024 06:18

Amazon prime do live sports events but they say live very clearly at the top.
I’ve never watched anything live on you tube but I would imagine it would also say clearly too?
A quick google search shows that you can hide the live tab if it helps https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1IQCnAu7Ig8

If a guest uses bbc i player at your house they do so via their tv licence so not a problem

Couple of points on questions asked here...

  • The thing about "Live" streaming is in the news again, and a lot of the info isn't right. The main part of the definition is "TV" and what that means. It means traditional TV channels (so not Youtube (except things like Sky news), Netflix or Amazon). Even with Amazon's sports events these are probably not going to be from a TV channel (although how you would check is a bit of a mystery).
  • When a visitor uses iPlayer etc. at your premises, all you need to do is warn them (for their benefit) that you do not have a Licence. After that, it's entirely their responsibility. If they are using a device powered by its own internal batteries, they are likely covered by their own home licence, if they have one.
