How much do your winter energy bills differ to summer?

I’m trying to work out how much we need to budget on a monthly basis to cover our gas and electric bills throughout the whole year and am a bit clueless because our circumstances have changed drastically!
We’ve recently moved in to a new house - Edwardian, high ceilings, poor insulation etc. A bit of a money pit in terms of energy bills, which we anticipated it would be. Before this we were in a new build and on a fixed rate for our energy, which was fixed before energy prices really shot up.
We are using more energy in this new house so I really don’t have a comparison to try and work out how much our energy bills might be come the summer months.
For context, our last month’s bill was £260 for gas and electric. Does anyone out there pay a similar amount who could share how much this compares to their summer bills?

That’s similar to mine and our summer bill was around £130 per month.

£250 last month, £95 in summer...gas and electricity combined

GTsundaydriver · 19/01/2024 20:28

Summer bills (pcm)
Gas roughly £15
Electric roughly £50

Winter bills (pcm)
Gas £150-200 depending on how bad a winter we get
Electric roughly £75

Last bill £92, summer £60-65 so summer about 2/3 of winter.

I should add, 1920 build, terrace property, no insulation at all, we are on prepayment meters, one of the cheapest suppliers and get 1 month free each year as part of being a customer. We use very little gas in the summer but a lot in winter as the property gets extremely cold

July 23: electric £60, gas £8 (almost entirely standing charge)
December 23: electric £70, gas £25

Direct debit set: electric £80 and gas £20

Electric for cooking and showering and tumble dryer in winter. Gas just for heating and our home is a small 2 bed flat so it doesn't need much. I've just moved onto a cheaper tariff and half price Sundays with British gas too.

Close to £300 per month in winter. More like £90 in summer. We have solar panels and a battery so electricity is only a small part of the overall bill. Spending about £12 per day just on gas this week.

Alainlechat · 19/01/2024 20:56

Electricity about the same at £150, maybe a tenner less in a the Summer, gas goes from about 60 to £160.

My annual cost is 10x a winter bill. So I would budget £2600 a year or just over £200 a month in your situation.

We moved house about a year ago so had winter bills when we moved in. Initially our estimated monthly amount was set too high and we accrued a Lot of credit but they adjusted our payments - we have been paying £130 a month but it’s going up another £50 from next month as they estimated it too low and our winter costs were a lot more. We pay the same amount every month and it usually just means by summer we are in credit which balances out the winter months

house built 2006 4 bed 3 storey terraced with 4 adults living here

Similar property with poor insulation and a heating money pit and gas accounts for about 2/3 of our monthly bill, electric 1/3 in winter, total was about £330 last month. As soon as the heating goes on the bills shoot straight up,(up to £15 a day in total) we were on the old tariff too and didn’t worry too much about it but the rates have now doubled. Using other methods to heat ourselves now such as electric blankets, microwave beanies, thermal clothes, heated airer for clothes etc and have to turn the heating down / off. Our electric use is pretty similar all year round except if you do / don’t use a tumble dryer which is only occasional in winter

Thanks so much everyone for your replies - really helpful! I should have mentioned we have had the keys to our house since April, so have been paying bills since then, but the house was empty while we did renovations to it so our current estimated annual bills which covered the summer months are totally skewed by 5+ months where we paid very little.
We have a toddler so the washing machine and tumble drier seem to be on most days which doesn’t help with our costs. And we are understandably paying more for gas now that we live in a chilly old house with original windows!
But the replies have been really helpful for relative comparisons and will help me budget for the rest of the year.

We pay:
€275 a month for heating and hot water
€140 electric

Our heating and hot water actual use is about x5 in winter, so if we paid per bill it would be more like €100 in summer and €500 winter, but it’s direct debit money by to even out. Our electric use doesn’t really change between winter and summer as it’s not heating anything, so that’s fairly similar.
We get any excess payments refunded after 12 months. Usually our €140 electric a month is refunded around €100 at the end of the year.

We’re in the same boat. Got keys in May, moved in end of Sept. I’m budgeting £250 a month. I’ve been pleasantly surprised so far, it is war,er than I thought. DH is reading gas bill every Saturday currently, £68 last one and £50 previous 2 weeks. If it is under £80 this week I will be pleased.
