Energy switch

I came off an amazing 2 year energy fix in October (gas and electricity). I am now on a variable rate with Eon next. I have a smart meter. I noticed my daily total increased slightly once the fixed rate ended. However from January 1st it has gone up massively and the amount it's costing per day has just about doubled. I know there was a price cap increase but surely wouldn't have made this much difference! I am in credit by a couple of hundred. Is it worth switching and if so who to? Eon next fixed rates are not great and I wondered is there actually any goodish fixed tarrifs at the moment? Thanks

Hi @Firstshoes, I can highly recommend Octopus. If you sign up now using a referral code, you would get £50 credit to your account. They also have octoplus where you can get points if you opt in for saver sessions. The app is really easy to use.

Forgot to say, you can get a quote in under 2 mins on the link if you have your annual usage 🙂

I'm with octopus,it wasn't all plain sailing. It was fine till we got a smart meter,we got solar panels, and it appeared to have "upset" their system. My bills have more than doubled in winter, grey rainy days, hardly any solar. I made sure to stack plenty of credit in summer, they were only doing fixes for existing customers. I was really lucky (or clever 🤣) did a 2 year fix which ended last year,so cushioned is when the big rises came

@Firstshoes I was on the same fix as you which ended in October. It was great! I'm on the Next Pledge Tracker 12m v2 with Eon Next and the price increase is horrific. I submitted my meter readings on the 1st and could cry at how expensive it is now.

I hope you don't mind, but I'll be following your thread with interest.

Gosh no of course I don't mind. It is eyewatering how much it has increased. I hope there's something we can switch to that will help!

Try Uswitch, MSE or Quidco to compare and get cash back

@jackstini Quidco is a good shout. I use them every year for insurance comparisons. And I do all my shopping via them.

Thanks for the reminder!

@Firstshoes thanks for letting me hijack!

I read online last autumn saying Eon Next we're going to offer this: www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2023/09/e-on-next-winter-support-scheme/

I meet all the criteria but have heard nothing. Have you heard of this/been offered it?

Aposterhasnoname · 04/01/2024 17:03

Doesn’t help with your rates, but I found that when we came of our eon next fixed rate last March, they didn’t update the tariff on the display until the 1st Jan so it looked like a sudden massive increase when it wasn’t really. Nearly gave us a heart attack at the time though.

Chasingsquirrels · 04/01/2024 17:03

I'd wonder if your smart meter wasn't updated when you came off the fix, because the 1 Jan increase is around 5% so wouldn't explain the increase you've seen.

I'd also check your actual bills and see what they say, rather than relying on the in-house display figures.

No, we haven't heard about that unfortunately. Would be lovely though! Yes, I think you are all right. They have obviously only updated the smart meter with the new rates on 1 January. We wondered why it hadn't changed much when we came off the fixed rate in October. It is scarily more expensive now but I suppose we were lucky to have it fixed so low for 2 years.

We switched to the Octopus tracker tariff in July, and so far its saved around 30% compared the standard rates, but its not a tariff for someone who worries that the tracker rate may go above the standard rate, so you then end up paying a rate higher than the standard. The rate changes every day, as it tracks wholesale prices, as i understand it. If you are happy to take a chance on it, then its worth considering. You have to look at it as a longer term option.

So far, since switching, we haven't paid more than the standard rate on any day, and we've been on it for six months. Over Christmas the rates were really low, around 8p/kwh for electricity and just under 4p/kwh for gas, as compared to something like 27p for electricity and 7p for gas as the standard rates.
