I'll join..I joined this year but fell off quite early on. Mine will be a minimal spending as there will be things I need for our newborn. But will be trying to buy things we need second hand and sell on stuff we are no longer using. Combination of reduced earnings due to mat leave, needing to save to move and wanting to reduce the clutter I'm our house will be driving me.

Lastminutebride · 26/12/2023 21:10

Count me in. Really need to spend the least amount possible as I’ve been spending money like it’s going out of fashion

RedDoughnut · 26/12/2023 21:10

I'm in.

What exactly are people buying/ not buying?
I have a huge Amazon habit.
We need a roof repair in the next few months and my credit card bill is also out of control.

ProjectsGalore · 26/12/2023 21:23

I'm jumping in too!

Purpleavocado · 26/12/2023 21:27

I'll join, I want to pay off my last credit card, and build a 6 month emergency fund. I've been binging a lot of Caleb Hammer youtube videos.

Caffeinequeen91 · 26/12/2023 21:30

Interested! I’ve been deleting the sales emails without my usual clicking on the links….

meemawww · 26/12/2023 21:47

Sounds like a lot of people are in the same boat!

Can I join? I have a 4k credit card bill to pay off which is additional costs for home improvements from 2023 and Vet bills insurance excess. It is 0% but due remortgage the end on 2024.

I also need to save another 10k to pay off a loan by the end of next year.

bugaboo218 · 26/12/2023 23:49

Can I join?

I want to be more mindful of my spending in 2024.

MikeRafone · 27/12/2023 08:38

I’ve had two days practice at not spending 😂 but today having lunch at the pub so will be spending

EllieQ · 27/12/2023 09:29

Joining for a low-spend January and aiming to continue for the rest of the year. We have been reasonably comfortable (not high income, but don’t live an expensive lifestyle), but had to remortgage earlier this year to pay for unexpected roof repairs, the cost of everything is creeping up, I’ve been in the habit of not tracking my spending, and I’m in my overdraft (£406) and have £788 of credit card debt. Not huge amounts, but I’m not saving anything and we have no joint savings either. We also have too much stuff in the house (I’m on the decluttering threads) and don’t need anything else in the house.

I need to review our household budget, which covers bills, food, and other household stuff, but I want to focus on my personal spends more. For January I’m not going to buy:

  • any clothes or shoes for me unless a necessary replacement eg: tights that have got holes.
  • any clothes for DD (age 8) unless it’s a necessary replacement
  • any makeup (unlikely as I hardly buy any)
  • Any books or stationery (I love pretty notebooks but don’t need any!)
  • Anything for the house unless a necessary replacement

I will be paying for:

  • After school club for Jan-March (joint expenditure)
  • DD’s swimming, dance, and art lessons for the term (joint expenditure)
  • Birthday presents (teen nephews x 2)
  • Birthday cards (nephews x 2, cousin, cousin’s DD)
  • A trip to the cinema to see Wonka (joint expenditure, but probably this week rather than Jan).

I will also budget for:

  • £10 a week for my consumables/ treats (mainly tea/ coffee when I’m working in the main office which is a couple of times a month)
  • £10 a week for joint treats (if I’m taking DD out and we get a snack).
  • £TBC for bus fare when we’re out and about (varies, but at the moment DD gets free bus fare)

I’ll try to report in each day.

Joining
Fed up of just buying stuff, and often realising that I either already have it or one v v similar.

mickandrorty · 27/12/2023 12:52

I'm hoping for a no spend year but starting with just January. I have set myself 3 money saving challenges this year, dice roll, penny and the 1k challenge. I am lucky to still have money in my pots for birthdays, car, days out ect but will be adding to them when i can but they are fluid and are used as and when needed to me these spends are not classed as spending because they are planned for. I am focusing on the 2+ takeaways a week and impulse purchases on amazon, buying random shit the kids ask for as that is what is costing us a lot of money .

Jinglebellrocked · 27/12/2023 12:55

In! I really want to stop all the frivolous stuff, buying stuff I don’t need. I want to be creative with the clothes I have.

im joining an expensive gym that I’m hoping will give me structure to my week and some healthy to do and going to budget one meal a month and one brunch.

BuddhaAtSea · 27/12/2023 13:09

I’ll join you.

I get paid on the 25th, the last bills leave my account on the 1st of every month. My aim is not not spend any money till the 5th of each month.

I’m vegetarian and I have an allotment. The plan is to not spend any money on food from June to September bar the occasional flour, eggs, cheese etc.

I have about 200 books to read. So no money on books in 2024. I have a serious problem with buying books.

I bought spare wellies and several pairs of shoes last year, no shoes needed for 2024. My running shoes have a hole in the toe though, having said that.

No clothes bar underwear, I need that.

No holiday this year. I am planning to pay off my mortgage in a couple of years’ time.

I spent thousands on clothes this year. Because I gained a lot of weight, I needed everything.

That’s my plan.

nillynelly · 27/12/2023 13:13

I would like to join.

I think I waste money on top up shops. Also takeaway coffee. I must spend a fortune. So I want to tackle that sort of thing. I do have a birthday to buy for in January and essential sports uniform item for one child, but otherwise no.

Glenthebattleostrich · 27/12/2023 14:48

I'd love to join. No big occasions until DDs birthday in May. I really need to get. a grip on my spending and possibly figure out how to get some freelance work to increase my income so we can enjoy the holidays

GogoGobo · 27/12/2023 15:23

RedDoughnut · 26/12/2023 21:10

I'm in.

What exactly are people buying/ not buying?
I have a huge Amazon habit.
We need a roof repair in the next few months and my credit card bill is also out of control.

I’ve decided to say, if I woke up today without the Amazon item I am about to buy, would I walk 15 mins to the bus stop, wait for a bus, spend the fare, go into town and try 3 ships to find the item? If the answer is yes, I buy it. If the answer is no, I don’t!
I have become completely casual in my Amazon ordering!
I’m trying to think about how the purchases a bit more!

GogoGobo · 27/12/2023 15:24

I’m joining! I need a few kindred spirits for this challenge!

fishstiks · 27/12/2023 15:30

I'd like to join! Just starting out on self employed maternity leave for the third time so my earnings are seriously reduced and DH had his work cancelled from November onwards and hadn't secured anything for January yet eek!

Wineisnottheanswer · 27/12/2023 15:50

I’ll join. Want to get to my savings goal.

Hatty65 · 27/12/2023 15:59

I'll join in. I was planning on cutting right back on spending as I have significant personal changes this coming year which mean I'm going to struggle just to keep a roof over our head.

Katymaus · 27/12/2023 16:00

I'm in too. I find it much to easy to delude myself that I'm being careful when still buying on impulse. And I'm really good at finding a "good reason" for buying something.

Nanalisa60 · 27/12/2023 16:08

Count me in I’m really really going to try!! no cloths , no footwear, and no make up. I’m going to sell on vinted and not look at buying any.

caringcarer · 27/12/2023 16:20

I never spend much in January. I loaded up the freezer in December with beef, pork loin and leg of lamb on offer from various supermarkets plus I've got a lot of leftover cooked sliced beef to make a stew and cooked sliced turkey to make a couple of curries. I've also got a frozen turkey I got for half price on Saturday before Xmas and went straight home to freeze. I'll be cooking up cheap meals and baking.
