Jan energy price increase

We are thinking of switching our energy supplier as we (stupidly) didn't realise when we signed up years ago that they are exempt from the price cap so can basically charge what they like as it's "eco". So from Jan we are going to be paying 7p more per electric unit than the price cap is set at. I think the price cap is 30p and we will be paying 37p.

For gas we will be paying 9p and I think the cap is 7 or 8 from Jan? All these extra pennies add up and at first were happy to pay a premium for the eco friendly ethical reasons but I think ethics sadly need to take a hit with the cost of living!

So who are you with and how much will you be paying in Jan? Want to see if it's worth us switching.

Thanks!

I'm with Octopus. I fixed in August and I'm paying 27.7p for electric and 6.97p for gas, but you can look up tariffs here. https://octopus.energy/tariffs/

If you were looking to switch then if you use my code we'd both get £50 credit. I've been with them coming up two years and I'm happy with the service and I like that I can easily adjust my own direct debit online as needed.

I don't have one either or intend to get one anytime soon.

Look up Money Saving Expert and the Eon offer.

Lloki · 18/12/2023 14:13

Just to say I wanted to switch to Octopus but they are not offering fixed tariff to new customers, which is a bummer

My fixed rate isn't great, I just wanted the security. I'm currently paying just above the variable rate and will be just below in January, so it will likely even out.

I dont know if there are any good deals at the moment. The Eon offer is only 3% or about £50 a year on average usage (would be less than £30 for us) and you are locked in with exit fees. The Octopus referral credit is £50 and you are not locked in. So it looks like the Eon offer is only better for high energy users.

We fixed with British Gas after hearing about it from Martin Lewis.

Thanks @DarlingCoffee what did Martin Lewis say? I've heard British gas only bill every 3 months is this right? I'd like monthly bills.

Have a good look at his money saving expert page and hopefully it might still be there unless the offer has been pulled already.

We have a monthly DD with BG and I do think their customer service is particularly good.

Also with Octopus on the same rate as PP quoted. It won't go up in Jan. Iirc I can also exit it whenever I want to as well, but my price is protected for 12 mths.

I have generally found them the best company to deal with. I email them saying 'my DD is £150 and I am using £95 and have been for months, please lower it and refund me', and they just do it, no squabbles. Other energy companies won't do that for you without getting into a barny.

If you can't go for eco, maybe go for ethics instead. Read up about their founder and their initiatives.

Eon were fine when they were just Eon, but when they became Eon Next about a year and a half ago, they became absolutely appalling, so I left them. They were so bad in fact that I left them four months before my cheap fixed price contract was due to end - knowing noone else was offering any fixes.
