How much per day is your gas/electricity costing?

Hi. I’ve become too interested in watching the smart meter to see what my daily spend is. Just wondered what others are spending.

For context, 3 bed house with gas CH and gas cooker. We have heating on for an hour in morning and about 5 hours in evening with thermostat set to 18.

  • electricity is fairly constant for us as not impacted by weather…around £1.50 per day - including probably one run of either dishwasher or washing machine.
  • gas - in the cold spell over weekend cost £10.50. (It was on an extra couple of hours as so cold) Most of Nov was costing about £7.50

Am on the standard tariff. Do these seem high/low/normal compared to what you guys are spending

4 bed, 3 receptions, 2 of us, one at school all day and I WFH 2 days a week. I use an oil filled radiator in my office during the day. Thermostat set to 20 degrees between 5:30 and 8am and 4:30 and 9pm. I boost it at other times if I’m cold or at the weekends.

Averaged £240 a month for gas and electric combined in October and November. So £8 a day.

gotomomo · 11/12/2023 13:08

£5.60 a day on average currently. That's 4 adults, 2 of which don't understand the concept of turning off lights!!!

@gotomomo if you have energy efficient lights (that everyone has now) your lights will use up very little electricity so unless you live in a mansion turning off lights is not going to make a huge difference to your bill. The things that make the most difference are things that generate heat - e.g. dishwashers, dryers, ovens, etc.

BookWorm45 · 11/12/2023 16:23

I've got a smart meter and relate to you, OP, it's very addictive to see how much has been spent / consumed,

3 bed detached (though only a very narrow passage to next house, consequently some protection from the east wind). Gas heating / boiler. Thermostat is set to 16 / 17 during periods in the day (we also use electric blankets and so on).

Gas spend for November came out as £89, therefore £2.96 per day on average.

Elec spend for Oct and Nov is quite similar, £2.91 per day on average. This would include at least one run of a dishwasher and a washing machine.

SweetPetrichor · 11/12/2023 16:28

In November we used approximately £6 per day for gas and electricity total. That’s approx based on bill/30 days but may be out a smidge cause don’t always give the monthly reading on the same day each month but it’s close enough.

crazycatladie · 11/12/2023 16:34

Around £10per day for both. Slightly more if we charge the car

FatMumSlimDad · 11/12/2023 16:46

Days we're at work/school now it's cold and we have the heating on in the morning and evening it's around £6/day combined.

Weekend days around £10-12 apart from when it was the really cold snap then a couple of £ more each day as we had the heating on more.

We're in a 4 bed semi.

CissOff · 11/12/2023 16:53

Lord. Mine is insane compared to some of you. Oops!

edited to add we have a 4 bed detached but I WFH 3 days a week.

Desecratedcoconut · 11/12/2023 16:57

Bloody Hell Cis...maybe close down the west wing over winter? 😉

monpetitchou · 11/12/2023 16:59

Our electric for Nov was £87 and gas was £45. So averages about £4.33 a day total (£2.90 electric, £1.50 gas) so feeling like we're definitely on the lower end of some of the numbers on here!
Small 3 bed terrace, just me and DH, WFH 2-3 days a week. We just knock the thermostat up to 19 or 20 when we need to, and the house warms up quickly thankfully. We do use a dehumidifier for drying laundry and on cold days when there's lots of condensation in the mornings, it costs around 10p an hour.

CissOff · 11/12/2023 16:59

I know! No idea why it’s so high. Standing charge is a fiver a day though 🥺

WannabeMathematician · 11/12/2023 17:02

@CissOff how the hell is your standing charge over £5? Ours is less that 40p

Desecratedcoconut · 11/12/2023 17:03

Are you sure, it looks like a fiver a week? We are at 55p/day, so almost £4/week.

CissOff · 11/12/2023 17:08

Ahhh that would make more sense 🙈 yeah, it’s a lot. Will look at WTF is going on though. Last year my December bill was £460 for the month but I’ll be more than that at this rate.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 11/12/2023 17:35

I live in an old (200years +) house, poorly insulated, single glazed and no matter how hard I try I cannot get my electricity use under 9kW a day. I put the washing machine on a cold wash 2 - 3 times a week, don't use the tumble drier any more and rarely use the oven now. No smart meter as we can't have one so trapped on my tariff, I use around £3 a day in electricity. House is heated by oil as is the water.

Catsknowbest · 11/12/2023 19:33

Bungalow 2 bed, large hall, open plan living dining and kitchen. 2 adults. £2.50 approx daily elec, £3.50 gas. Heating on most of day as partner disabled from stroke.

piscofrisco · 11/12/2023 20:32

£12.50 a day. 6 of us in a 5 bed house (which is an odd shape and hard to heat). That's with the heating on for a few hours morning and night. In between that it's freezing (even on hot days it's cold in our house). DSS's PlayStation seems to just alot of juice too.

WombatChocolate · 10/01/2024 17:55

It’s cold again. My daily spend on gas has been around £10. That has involved it being on for an hour and a half in the morning (getting up to 17 degrees in that time) followed by being on all day at 15 degrees as people have been at home. At about 5pm I turn it up to 17 degrees for the evening until it goes off at 9.30.

Is this a good way to spend my £10? It seems to use a lot of energy to heat up from cold. However, I don’t leave it on all night as that seems to costs several pounds more. We are never toasty warm. When it’s 17degrees in the evening we are comfortable as we are used to it and wear warm clothes. In the day, at 15 degrees we are just about okay if still wearing warm clothes.

I’ve opted for more hours at lower heat than fewer at hotter heat because at least were never freezing (it would drop to about 12 degrees if off) and heating it up to 18 or 19 from cold seems to use such a vast amount of energy.

Sorry- it’s all very tedious. But I’m feeling it’s costing a lot and we’re still not really warm, just not freezing.

Any thought on how to better use the £10. I really don’t want to spend above that on gas. Electricity stays pretty constant at around £1.50 a day.

thansk.

We are in a 4 bed 3 storey townhouse - mid terraced so well insulated. We have a gas hob and gas CH otherwise mostly electric. 4 of us including 2 teens who have games consoles and TVs in their rooms. We are mostly out during the day at work/school.

if we use tumble drier it jumps to up to £9 a day for combined gas/elec. Normal days are around £6.50.

Have a hive system so water comes on twice a day for showers etc and heating set to come on if temp drops below certain temp but honestly the house is so well insulated it barely comes on.

our previous house (3 bed link detached) was horrendous - useless windows and so cold we had to run the heating a lot more so we’ve saved money moving into a newer house a year ago

Desecratedcoconut · 10/01/2024 18:14

We spent £6 on gas yesterday almost on the nose and kept the house at 20.5c through the day and don't let it drop below 17c overnight.

We are in a 4-bed detached. We do have heaps of insulation. But we are in the n.e. and we haven't had any snow to contend with although our high temp was 4c.

Borborygmus · 10/01/2024 18:50

For December we averaged £2.72 (electricity) and £3.97 (gas). That's mainly because my OH is always freezing so has the CH on all the time (other than at night) with the thermostat set at 24ºC.

Notcontent · 12/01/2024 01:15

@WombatChocolate i don’t think there is anything more you can do as you are already turning it off at night and presumably when no one is home.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 12/01/2024 02:24

Expensive December for us. £3 per day average for gas and electric combined. 2 bed terrace, 2 adults. always one of us at home.

user1477391263 · 12/01/2024 02:39

Just in case anyone is interested in international comparisons: In Tokyo, we pay about 5 pounds a day on gas (gas cooker, hot water) and 1.20 pounds a day on leccy during the coldest season. We have less cold winters, of course. Heat pumps, which we use, are great and very energy efficient as long as you have EITHER less cold winters (as in Japan) OR very good insulation (as in the Nordic countries).

The electricity bill is highest for July and September at around 2 pounds a day (I am away from home much of August) when we have to use some air con; with climate change, I am guessing more Brits will have to do this in summer as well in the future.

Cotswoldbee · 14/01/2024 16:52

Our actual spend for Dec was £122 G&E. Nov was £92 and Oct about £80.
4-Bed det, retired so both at home a fair bit. Latter end of Dec wasn't so cold but the constant rain meant the tumble and dehumidifier were in daily use.

Have DD set at £100pm and have built up a balance of nearly £1k so this year are going to reduce the DD and eat into this.

We tend to spend quite a bit of time in separate rooms. When I am with Ddogs in the family room, OH may be in the lounge watching something else on TV or doing a jigsaw. At other times, one of us could well be in the study or craft/hobby room (i.e. we aren't huddled up in one room).
House is a newbuild (well insulated) with separate heating zones which obviously helps. All windows are fitted with heavy curtains and shutter blinds so it is snug & cosy.

Papillon23 · 14/01/2024 17:07

I will have spent about £40 this week in total, about 1/3 electric and 2/3 gas.

(Edit: Just double checking I think it should be £13.50 in electric use plus £3 ish in standing charges.

Then about 50kWh per day on gas, which at 7p a unit is another £3.50 a day ish so totals £24.50 plus another £2 standing charges ish.

So will end up about £45 this week I think)

2 bed end of terrace, Victorian, single skin but do have double glazing.

That does similar to you @WombatChocolate - off (or close to, kicks in if the house gets to 12) overnight, up to 17 in the morning, drops over the course of the day (theoretically to 14 but in reality i get too cold and turn it on when the house gets to 15), back up to 17 for the evening. Turn it up to 18 for a treat and on a bit longer at the weekends.
