Does the £600 include the 400 food shop? It wasn't clear to me in the article. It is still not a lot with how much things cost these days. Apparently she got back lash with some saying they only have £50. I am sure that is the case and feel for all.
On Mumsnet though most would say £600 is too little only have to look at the can we afford this mortgage threads.

I wish they’d pointed out that she could get a prepayment certificate and cap prescriptions at about £9 a month.

witchypaws · 02/12/2023 10:35

I guess it doesn't include her food shop
If I was saying how much I had left after bills then I wouldn't include food
After everything (bills and food) I have £3 left this month which is a fairly normal month for me

Terfosaurus · 02/12/2023 10:46

Surely she gets some uc on that wage ? Her food bill seems high to me. Especially if she shops in Aldi.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/12/2023 10:58

It says her rent is £450, so the £600 is probably after her food shopping as she's probably got at least £2k pm coming in incl CB and top ups.

Which will cover the basics but also require careful budgeting to have a life too. So obviously will be a struggle if she is in debt or doesn’t budget for irregular costs like Christmas.

It says she's off work ill at the moment so maybe she's talking about her current situation while not earning.

There's not really enough information to know how bad she has it, obviously she's not well off but it looks like she's on the sort of money that some manage reasonably on but others will struggle because they live month to month rather than budgeting across the whole year.

Reading the numbers at the end of article, her rent (very low), gas/electric, food and childcare come to pretty much her take home, if ive got it right at 1700 vs 1500 for the named items. No mention of council tax.

She will get single person discount so must be around £100. I am not sure how much UC she would get.
