Tin of chocolate cheaper alternatives

Mammot · 17/10/2023 20:05

With the price of the usual chocolate tins (roses, quality street, celebrations etc) getting smaller and so so much more expensive. And with 6 people to gift to. Does anyone know of any own brand alternatives?
The ones I read about in an old thread have all dissapeared it seems.

Hi Mammot, how much are the tins you mean, so that I can try to think of something cheaper?

Are you definitely locked in the present buying cycle with this group of people? Or would you like to try to change this?

AvengedQuince · 17/10/2023 21:09

If the tins are getting smaller, you would still just give a tin per person though, are they also more expensive per tin?

Findyourneutralspace · 17/10/2023 21:10

I always think of a tin of chocs as a kind of token gift - could you swap it for a tin of shortbread/biscuits?

CyberCritical · 17/10/2023 21:10

Have you looked round for offers? Sainsburys have the tins of Roses/Heroes etc on for £4 each at the minute and I'm not sure you'd find much cheaper than that www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/groceries/christmas/chocolate-and-sweets/sharing-tubs-and-bags/c:1043318?fromMegaNav=1

Evenstar · 17/10/2023 21:57

I honestly can’t think of a brand cheaper than Roses etc. They are on offer at lots of shops, Marks and Spencer usually do a good offer on tins of butter shortbread running up to Christmas, I think they might be £4 or £5 on the deal and they are very nice.

It might be better to rethink the gifting if it is getting too expensive, honestly if they give you a gift in return they might feel the same.

Agree with rethinking gifting. We get so many of this types of chocolates at Christmas and I don't really like them, I'm a quality not quantity person and would honestly rather receive one of the Hotel Chocolat mini selector packs than a tub of QS etc.

They get opened, we eat some 'because they're there' despite not really enjoying them and to me it's a relief when DP finishes them off.

But I don't understand what you mean by 'so so more expensive' they're £4 which is ghe same price they've been for years and ridiculously cheap for that amount of chocolate

enchantedsquirrelwood · 18/10/2023 13:56

£4 isn't cheap when you get about 4 chocolates these days.

I'd suggest M&S, their boxes are £5 and you get more than 4 chocolates in them!

The OP was talking about the big tubs of chocolate. The chocolate is low quality but there is a lot of it.

Muddle2000 · 18/10/2023 16:06

What about a box of biscuits

Mammot · 18/10/2023 17:09

Thanks. It's my dad buying for relatives. I've asked if he has to but he seems determined that he does but that he can't afford it.
Tins are 600g for £5.50/£6 I saw a deal for £4 today which seems like the best were going to get

OP posts:
Mammot · 18/10/2023 17:10

Yeah I asked him this too. But he thinks those are children's gifts not adult gifts. I said chocolates they're probably not even going to eat most of them. But he's set in stone on it

OP posts:
Mammot · 18/10/2023 17:13

Yeah I said the same thing to dad. But he's obsessed over how it's bigger. I told him people probably won't eat half of them.
He got them for £3 last year, maybe that was a deal. And until today with sainsburys nectar "deal" they've been £5.50/£6 a tin

The prices will vary before Christmas. Aldi / Lidl will go cheaper than Tesco etc, when the time is right. The stock they have in right now isn’t at the lowest price yet.

Marks & Spencer have in all of their mince pies etc, none of which are dated until Christmas. Saw some October ones reduced today. It’s madness. They want you to keep buying!

Watchthedoormat · 18/10/2023 17:18

He could buy the roses/heroes etc in the pouch bags instead.
It's the thought that counts and everyone knows things are getting expensive.
I think there's a great selection of pouches too, Toblerone, Dairy Milk, Terry's, as well as the usual suspects.

The bags you can get for £3 but they are much smaller, or a box of after eights are £3? You aren't going to get something comparable to a tub for much less than £4, it is very cheap for the amount of chocolate.

nearlywinteragain · 18/10/2023 18:08

They are very cheap and often being sold as loss leaders.
But it doesn't make sense for your dad to spend money he can't afford.
Could your family do a secret Santa instead?

Would he gift a box of After Eights instead. Much nicer and you can get them for £2.50

Mammot · 18/10/2023 18:41

Yeah we saw those today and said the same thing. October is a weird exp date on a Christmas item
