Single and renting

Genuine question, my ex and I have 3 DC, he's currently staying at his mums but unable to have the DC there due to lack of space

He is trying desperately to get his own place but on a salary of £1600 seems nigh on impossible

Does anyone have any suggestions? I've offered him to stay here to have the DC and I can stay with friends on a weekend but he's not happy to do this long term and I have looked at rental properties in our area (SW) and even a room in a shared house Is £800 per.month plus bills!

He may be eligible to claim Universal credit but unlikely as if he doesn't have any children on his claim he would only be eligible for a one bedroom rate or if under 35 only a shared accommodation rate as wouldn't be eligible to claim for extra rooms for the kids.

I'm in a similar situation as him but no kids. As a single man with that income no dependents he wouldn't be entitled to any benefits so a houseshare is the way it's probably going to be (which of course sucks for when your kids visit).

I don't know where you are in the south west, but there's plenty of rooms in Bristol (I think the most expensive city in the SW?) for £700 including bills:

Yes he's reluctant for a house share because of the children and it means they won't be able to stay overnight there

So frustrating, back to the drawing board, yes he is under 35 and no professional qualifications

Can't the kids sleep in his bed and he sleep on the sofa for the odd night they stay over

Not perfect but Better than nothing

Or

As you said he stays at yours. Kids in own bed and high stay with a friend
