Looking to switch G and E - no tariffs coming up?!

Wondering if anyone can shed light/something obvious I'm missing.

We're coming to the end of a 3 year fixed with EDF. No smart meter and no plans to have one (yet. Reasons why are irrelevant). Below average consumption for dual fuel pay by DD.

Usually when I do a compare I've several fixed and variables from all over to choose from (aware fixed tariffs are only just beginning to appear) but this time I've literally had one come up!! With So Energy who I've never heard of (reluctant to go with a very small provider as pretty much every time we do they go under which is a ball ache all over again). On this fixed it doubles our payment

EDF will only offer variable as must have a smart meter for their fixed. And on this out monthly payments are going to double even with change to price cap taken into account.

Anything I'm missing?!!

No its the way things seem to be now. Companies don't seem to be taking new customers. You could look at the moneysavingexpert website?
I tried uswitch and had a message at one point basically saying there were no results!

Your bill will probably double from three years ago. You've been fortunate to have been in a fixed till now, but the standard variable rate is almost identical to the limited fixes there are on the market now. Energy prices have skyrocketed.

A lot of fixes aren't open market either, they are for existing customers, so you would have to switch to a provider and go on the SVR and then be able to access their fixed tariffs.

Thanks all , appreciate you posting. And yes I realise we've been sheltered by our fix and the contrast is just a wee bit of a shock!

One thing I didn't compare when looking at that other fixed was standing charges which are possibly higher.

Do you think not having a smart meter is making a difference?

Not really unless you specifically want a smart tariff, such as one that has certain hours of cheap energy for charging an EV or Octopus have some smart tariffs that are tracker rates, one daily, one that offers different rates every half hour. Standard tariffs are the same for standard meters and smart.

Thanks Clef.

Agree next to nothing out there, although that is not really a great surprise.

SO Energy is largely owned the Irish state-owned ESB energy, somewhat different from the myriad of genuinely small suppliers that went bust.

Ahh I didn't know that. Maybe I'll look a bit closer.

I think I'll sit tight for the mo then as my fixed comes off on 1st October. At least with SVR I can move if something comes up after, fee free. And it's about the same £ for now.

Cheers all!
