Fixing energy bills?

Our current very good fix comes to an end next month.

The new ones look to be around £100 p/m more, which is do-able if annoying obviously. However I can't see any indications on what the feeling is around energy prices. In theory they shouldn't soar again, but are they likely to drop?

I'm toying between a 1 and 2 year fix, our last was 2 years which massively paid off, but that was a big period of uncertainty and change.

What is everyone else doing?

It's not the price per month you look at but the underlying price per kwh and standing charge

I'm not fixing just yet but haven't been on a fix for ages anyway

IhearyouClemFandango · 07/09/2023 15:53

Oh yes I know, I have entered all my figures correctly and know what I'm doing, my query was more whether the general mood was that prices were going up/down/staying the same.

DS works for an energy company and has told me it’s not worth fixing atm. His (and his colleagues) feeling is prices are likely to fall

I'm in the same position, 2 year fix for gas and electric due to end in October, I'm with e.on next , I've fixed for another year with e.on next, additional cost is £22 per month, but importantly I chose I tariff with no exit fees, so I'm locked in to a good price but if I wanted to I can move whenever I want and not have to pay exit fees. Depending on your supplier you can be offered a new tariff that will start when your new one ends? Perhaps have a look into it ? Eon emailed me and/or the options was available from 60 days left on my tariff

TiredEyesAndFatiguedTyres · 07/09/2023 16:22

For me, it depends on how much more the fix price is vs the variable and how big the penalty is if I want to leave the fix early.

I think the mood is that prices will stay about where they are now (maybe a touch higher in Jan) for the next year.

For me, that's not worth the fix (yet) but I will keep reviewing.

IhearyouClemFandango · 07/09/2023 18:21

I'm with E.On next too. The deals they are offering look competitive to those on comparison sites, with variable about £30 p/m cheaper than fixed.

Biggest jump is the standing charge, that's about double what we pay at the moment.

Martin Lewis has a calculator to give you a better idea of if you should fix. I'm with Octopus and have just fixed for 12 months. His calculator strongly advised me to consider it.

TiredEyesAndFatiguedTyres · 07/09/2023 20:32

Obviously only use this if it makes sense for you to go with Octpous, but the link below will give you £50 if/when you sign up. So might be worth taking that into account when doing a comparison?

I've just been looking to switch our provider and I didn't realise the disparity between standing charges in different areas. (from the MSE website)
So we are paying 61.8p per day for electricity and 29.1p for gas. (we are in Merseyside)
If we lived in London we would only be paying 38.18 p per day for electricity (gas is the same 29.1p)
over the year that's an extra £86 !!!

My Eon next 2 year fix is also ending in October. Just looking at my options with them and apart from their standard variable tariff, all of the options have pretty hefty exit fees...up to £150 per fuel!

dementedpixie · 11/09/2023 16:41

I'm in Scotland and my standing charge is 60.02p for electricity and 27.47p for gas. Its outrageous that some are paying so much less per day on electricity

mewkins · 11/09/2023 16:51

I'm also on eon next finishing in Oct. I'm low usage so the monthly cost is only up 20 per month on my current spend. 12 month fixed is a £75 exit charge per fuel and the 2 year fix is £150 exit charge per fuel. All of the fixes and variable are around the same charge give or take 7 pounds.

Jbrown76 · 11/09/2023 17:04

They had 2-3 tariffs on offer to me, 2 with exit fees, and another option with no exit fees. This is the tariff I'm now on

Jbrown76 · 11/09/2023 17:05

Next Pledge Tracker 12m V1

dementedpixie · 11/09/2023 17:17

The ones with no exit fees tend to be the variable rate tariff. Octopus is offering me a 1 year fix with £75 per fuel exit fee. The standing charges are the same as I currently pay but the price per kw/h are slightly cheaper. Think I'll stay on the variable for now

IhearyouClemFandango · 11/09/2023 17:20

Yes, I stuck with eon next, as the tariff they offered (same as yours or V2 maybe) was comparable with elsewhere so I thought I may as well.

Jbrown76 · 11/09/2023 17:28

Yes and having no exit fees means you can leave whenever you want without incurring a financial penalty

Next Pledge Tracker 12m V1

It's now Next Pledge Tracker V2 on offer which does have exit fees annoyingly. So they must have recently changed that.

Jbrown76 · 12/09/2023 06:46

Damn! You can leave a tariff 60 days before the end without exit fees, and I choose a new tariff 60 days before the one I'm on ends

Jbrown76 · 12/09/2023 06:49

I've added a screenshot of the email I received confirming my new tarrif

We’re also with eon next fix ending next month and have fixed for 1 year. We’ve been very lucky but it’s going to hurt - unit prices & standing charge now nearly all double what we’ve been paying. DH (using MSE though of course he told people not to fix 2 years ago so could be wrong!) says prices might come down a bit in October but go up again in January so hopefully over the year we should be ok.
