Excuse me but HOW is this a £28 shop???

I bought like 8 items … in ASDA? And I spent £18 on fruit and eggs in M&S shortly before which will probably last about 3 days.

Granted it’s a nice establishment but fruit elsewhere is shockingly bad and you pay like 80% of the price anyway so you may as well get the nice stuff.

Regardless £46 for a couple of days and I didn’t even get anything for me. I probably just won’t eat to be honest, maybe have some leftover egg bites and nuggets.

Literally, how are you all doing out there?

I buy shampoos, toiletries etc separately I go to savers for these. Also try lidl/aldi it's cheaper and we don't go without. I only go to tesco/asda if there is something specific like a branded cereal on the odd occasion.

Chewbecca · 31/08/2023 18:51

What's actually in the basket? (Other than cushelle loo roll)

Clefable · 31/08/2023 18:54

We've switched to Aldi and saving a fortune! Managing about £100 a week for a family of 4, which I'm happy with.

She's saying M&S is a nice establishment not Asda 😂

stripeyjug · 31/08/2023 18:54

Yeah the OP does have some toiletries & brands but £28!!!

Gowlett · 31/08/2023 18:55

Bog roll, need to buy the large packs.
Baby snacks, just give them a biscuit.
Childs Farm, hit Poundland instead…

BlueBlubbaWhale · 31/08/2023 18:56

Birdseye stuff is eye wateringly expensive. I spend 15-20 a week on their stupid overpriced dippers (ARFID kid)

BoohooWoohoo · 31/08/2023 18:57

stripeyjug · 31/08/2023 18:54

Yeah the OP does have some toiletries & brands but £28!!!

She has pretty much all brands. Downgrading to supermarket own brand (which are usually fine as substitutes) would shave a lot off the final total.

girlygirly · 31/08/2023 18:57

I nearly had heart failure earlier in Morrison's. I used to buy the fray bentos pie-inna-tin for my son for a quid. They are now.... <drum roll >

£3.25

😱😱😱😱

Bloody ridiculous.

bellac11 · 31/08/2023 18:57

We get toiletries,c leaning products, toilet and kitchen roll, bin bags etc in places like Home Bargains or similar, you cannot buy this stuff in a supermarket without it being through the roof

stripeyjug · 31/08/2023 18:58

@BoohooWoohoo yeah the point is even the own brands are a hell of a lot more expensive now then they were...

UndercoverCop · 31/08/2023 19:00

That's all branded, processed stuff.
We use child's farm but it's not cheap. You can definitely buy cheaper. The best value is Amazon if you want to keep using it

cocksstrideintheevening · 31/08/2023 19:01

You haven't bought any food, it's expensive brands, how much was the bog roll? Child's farm? Then it looks more reasonable

Susuwatariandkodama · 31/08/2023 19:04

Because it’s all branded, expensive items?

Basketofbobbins · 31/08/2023 19:08

Is that Child’s Farm shampoo? Because that’s about £9 a bottle.

Alba82 · 31/08/2023 19:09

We're a family of 2 Adults + 2 Teens, we also have 3 rabbits & 1 cat. I'm roughly spending £150 a week on groceries, toiletries & fresh foods for the rabbits. This includes packed lunches for 1 Teen & 1 adult. I buy some toiletries & cleaning products, laundry liquids, pet foods & toilet rolls/kitchen towels in bulk from Amazon on subscription monthly/bimonthly, by doing this i can get regular discount & can also check if the product is more expensive then switch to something cheaper.

I also split the shopping in to 2 lots, ethier tues/wed & sat/sun, This way I get fresh milk, bread, fruit & bread etc twice a week & eliminates the needs for buying this stuff from the local shop which is almost 50% more cost. I often shop between supermarkets & use b&m etc too

lemonyaid · 31/08/2023 19:09

I know the price has gone up but I don't think that's a ridiculous price

lemonyaid · 31/08/2023 19:11

Is that mince under the nuggets or onions?

queenMab99 · 31/08/2023 19:11

I buy cushelle, only because my 72 year old arse is a bit tender, I don't drink smoke or go on holiday, I have 2 luxuries, nice ground coffee and cushelle toilet paper. I have always used cheap stuff previously.
That is £28 worth of expensive crap you don't really need.
If you can't afford it don't buy it, then you can moan if you like.

liveforsummer · 31/08/2023 19:11

Well it's full of brand named convenience things so I'm not surprised. None of that had ever been cheap

Itsnotrightbutitsok · 31/08/2023 19:13

BlueBlubbaWhale · 31/08/2023 18:56

Birdseye stuff is eye wateringly expensive. I spend 15-20 a week on their stupid overpriced dippers (ARFID kid)

I agree.

My shop has gone up by at least £20 a week, simply because of birdseye stuff.
Unfortunately my DD can tell the difference between Birdseye and non birdseye stuff (and bloody ketchup which was about £2 now it’s about £5).

YANBU OP
Its honestly scary how much I now struggle to buy food, which I never have done before.

If Birdseye stuff is on offer then I will get a load of it.

I usually buy a bulk pack of toilet roll from B&M although it’s very thin stuff but still does the job.

I also buy oil spray in B&M as it’s usually about £1.

I try and buy non branded things but my DD is autistic and has ARFID and so I can only buy certain things.

I don’t have an aldi near me but I went to one a few weeks back and i found it too has also gone up a lot.

PeachesoutinGeorgia · 31/08/2023 19:13

Maybe I mislabelled the title as not much food was actually included, apologies 😅 Even still.

I swear Childs farm was £3.25 this time last year? they’ve whacked a whole £1 (We have to get it because of sensitive skin) Most of the other stuff I bought had one of those red save stickers next to it so this is the “reduced” price. They must just pluck a number out of thin air at this point surely

Is the unbranded stuff worth the downgrade if anyone has done switches?

stripeyjug · 31/08/2023 19:14

@PeachesoutinGeorgia I buy Child's farm, never paid more than £4 for it. Check amazon

ElderMillenials · 31/08/2023 19:15

you had me with the title... but lost me with childs farm, cushelle and Birdseye.

Switch to cheaper brands if it's a problem for you but that's not a food shop.

Also, M&S fruit and veg isn't that good. I'll admit it can be iffy at some supermarkets but lidl is consistently good, aldi and Morrisons mostly ok.

liveforsummer · 31/08/2023 19:16

Britneyfan · 31/08/2023 18:49

I feel like a lot of people here are missing the point! Yes I agree a lot of these things are more expensive branded products but they didn’t used to cost anything like this. People are allowed to buy brands if they want to! And the prices have gone up massively. We shouldn’t all be relegated to buying the cheapest things on the shelf because nobody can afford anything else. And the cheapest things on the shelf have gone up too anyway!

Not really missing the point, none of that would ever have been cheap
