Just about to start a receptionist job, £10.42ph, working 16 hours. I've not worked for 4 years since conceiving our eldest. My now husband (we married on Saturday!) earns £350 per week, we own our home outright and claim universal credit, our boys are 2 and 3. Will UC take 55p from every £1 and can I now claim 85% childcare? Our 2 year old is stating September and it's £384 per month for him. Our 3 year olds nursery is free.

As you have children UC will give you a Work Allowance; earnings from work you can keep before the taper starts. Because you're not getting a Housing Costs Element that will be at the Higher Rate - £631 in each Assessment Period.

That's applied to your combined net pay after Tax/NI and any pension you pay into. If your partner works already then that'll be in place in your claim already.

Your earnings are £166.72/week and you partner's £350.

UC sees that as £2088.02/month. The first £631 is ignored - work allowance. The rest, £1457, reduces UC by the 55p per £1 taper.

Max UC, including your Standard Allowance as a Couple, your kids and the Childcare is £1444.39. The taper reduces that by approx £800 giving UC payable of approx £640.00.
