Does anyone have any advice regarding getting social housing? I have recently joined the list but I don't really know anything regarding it or any tips.
I am going through a relationship breakdown so looking into my own place.

Depending on where you are you could be in for a very very very long wait.

Currently living with my ex partner, definitely impacting my mental health though

What part of the country do you live in? Do you have kids?

In London and the SE it's likely to be a 5-10 year wait.

Go to the housing options team and ask them as it's different in every area.

But if you're in his flat, I assume you've claimed overcrowding due to relationship breakdown? But you will not be high priority.

can he help? As in evict you, get a letter saying that, take that to housing options, and tell them you are homeless. It needs a date you will no longer be permitted to live there and your belongings will be removed. You will get better priority then and could get temporary housing from that date until you are found a permanent place.

I have a daughter and live in the midlands

Getting him to help as suggested by @whatwhatinthebutt is a dangerous game. If the Housing Authority get wind of any sort of 'conspiracy' you'll be off the list or at least moved a lot of places down it quicker than you can say Jack Robinson.

whatwhatinthebutt · 22/08/2023 12:33

This is what the housing options team tell you that you need in order to get priority. If you can't live there, you can't live there. If you can, you can.

If you can't, get the landlord to say that in writing.

MansfieldLark · 22/08/2023 12:34

Its area dependent. Would your ex partner be willing to tell the council he is making you homeless? Is the property you are in currently in joint names?

LondonQueen · 23/08/2023 13:26

Realistically social housing isn't an option unless you are deemed homeless, there's huge waiting lists as there's such a shortage of social housing available and not enough being built. Can you not afford private rental?

Redannie118 · 23/08/2023 13:36

Some incredibly unhelpful posts on here from the usual middle class pearl clutching mumsnetters who believe no one should be allowed social housing unless they sleep on the street and have next to no idea how the social housing system really works

Ring Shelter. Explain your situation to them with as much detail as you possibly can. They are amazing and I would not be in my current home without them. They will talk you through every step of the process and will give you help and support you will not find elsewhere. Good luck.

Thank you, I work myself full time as a teaching assistant but my wage would not be substantial enough to live off it. I have applied for social housing and hoping I just need keep bidding and hopefully will get somewhere xx

@georgiamae98 really hope you get somewhere soon. It must be tough living in your current situation.

Could you claim UC to top up your wages and hopefully allow you to rent privately?

My brothers ex partner moved into a 3 bed £1600 per month rental, 2 teens and earns a good wage. She also claims UC housing. This is in the SE.

P.s TA wages are rubbish, I know.
I am a TA and looking for a new job, purely because the wage is so low.

Will be rooting for you to get sorted ASAP 🙂
