How much is a reasonable monthly budget for a family of four (two adults and two children under five) for food (including meals at work), household items, and toiletries? Not-so-DH and I don't see eye-to-eye on expenditures. I'm curious to know what you spend on this and the size of your family.

400-500 a month

zurala · 14/08/2023 20:38

We are a family of for but with a 14 year old and a 9 year old. And two cats. We budget £130 a week for the supermarket shop.

Swifey40 · 14/08/2023 20:40

We are dh and I, ans ds11 and ds8 plus two cats, we spend £150 a week, sometimes slightly more, sometimes slightly less.

Coffeaddict · 14/08/2023 20:42

2 adults and 2 children under 5 and 11 dss 50% time. We spend about 150 a week on shopping

Thewallsof · 14/08/2023 20:44

Does he want to spend an unrealistically low amount but doesn't do the shopping? Just that's often the way in these threads...

Rivermedway · 14/08/2023 20:44

£500-600 per month. Ie. Approx £100 on main shop, and up to £50 per week on top-ups, those more expensive items etc.

Are the meals at work pack lunches or Tesco meal deals?

storypushers · 14/08/2023 20:45

Between 350 and 600 depending on brands/whether you snack/ what you drink/if you eat meat?

SternJosie · 14/08/2023 20:46

We're probably around £180 a week for food/toiletries/general household and cleaning. That's a family of 5, 2 adults, 2 teens and a 6 year old.

Tryingtokeepcalmandcarryon · 14/08/2023 20:49

£600 a month / approx £150 a week including food, toiletries, cleaning products for 2 adults and 2 children, 5 and 3. That includes a weekly only shop of approx £100 plus top-ups and prob £20 a week on alcohol

£200 per week(at least) for us on food, toiletries, cleaning and laundry stuff.
Me and Dh, two adult sons and 12yr old DD.

Jojobees · 14/08/2023 20:51

We are a family of 4 with a teen and a preschooler. 1 dog.
We spend £130 a week on food/toiletries and one week of the month it’s more like 160 with dishwasher tablets/laundry detergent.
I also spend £50 a month on bread and milk in between shops.

so a monthly total of £600 ish

MansfieldLark · 14/08/2023 20:51

Me, and two boys. I budget 700 for the month including takeaway and treats.

WeWereInParis · 14/08/2023 20:52

I'm assuming by household items you mean things like cleaning products etc? Rather than anything bigger?

We are two adults and two children under 5 and spend £350-400 a month on that.

purplemoonparty · 14/08/2023 20:54

I think this depends on where you live and where you shop.

For us, we spend £300-£400 per week on Ocado for food, toiletries, household items such as washing up liquid etc.

We are in SW London.

monpetitlapin · 14/08/2023 20:54

About £300-£400 per month here, unless it's someone's birthday, in which case it adds another £50 to that month's shop (bit more for Christmas as it's a multi-day thing for us).

Goldencup · 14/08/2023 20:54

I can get away with £80-90 a week for myself, a veggi DH and Dd (16). But no booze, most made from scratch and home baking. When DS (19) is home it is more like £130-150. So maybe £100-120, but will be more if dietary needs or meat eaters.

Last week's menu:
Home made pizza
Ottelenghi's Lentil ragu
Aubergine Chilli with rice and tortilla chips
Home made Gnocchi with cream and mushroom sauce
Sweet potato and chickpea curry with hm flat breads
Pasta bake with cherry tomatoes and roasted peppers

monpetitlapin · 14/08/2023 20:56

Big variables are: Are you buying formula (or something similar in cost like Alpro Growing Up Milk), are you buying lots of FreeFrom, or are you buying packs of nappies or bedwetting sheets? Those can seriously add £££ to your shop that you can't really cut out if you need them.

tiggergoesbounce · 14/08/2023 20:58

We spend about £170 a week.
Me, DH, 6 year old DS and the pooch. The pooch is only about a tenner a week though.

PurBal · 14/08/2023 20:58

Family of 4. 2 under 3 so using nappies (for both) and one child not yet weaned. Circa £400 per month.

Jamtartforme · 14/08/2023 20:58

I spend £70 a week so about £300 per month. That includes food, nappies and things like washing powder.

CatsOnTheChair · 14/08/2023 20:59

The kids are older, but about 150 a week here.
Remember that this multiply up to more than 600 a month, as some months have 5 food shop days in them.

EweGotToGrooveIt · 14/08/2023 20:59

3 adults. About £175 per week.

Growlybear83 · 14/08/2023 20:59

I'm spending at least £600 per month now that everything has increased so much, often more, for two adults and a cat.
