2 FT working adults, 1 in nursery, 1 off school needing packed meals for holiday clubs - shop is for a week.

Any guesses as to how much it cost? It includes everything except 1 adult’s lunches (includes 2nd adults lunches as leftovers) -

food cupboard: Wholemeal bread, beans, crisps, frozen pizza, chocolate digestives, garlic bread, lunch box cakes

8 Yo packed lunches (he’s crazy about avocados and olives and feta and puts away huge amounts of cheese and grows only vertically it appears!)

  1. Wholemeal sandwich with soft cheese and avocado
  2. side of olive and feta and toms and onion pot salad

  4. bag crisps from multipack

That’s a big shop but mostly cheap items, nothing luxurious.

maybe £100 ?

Combusting · 06/08/2023 12:18

Forgot to include! Paneer in dairy, and air fryer chips for freezer also in the picture and shop. Might be other stuff too!

Monsterjam · 06/08/2023 12:19

£120

BeeBelle16 · 06/08/2023 12:19

Good spot about luxurious. We don’t drink I forgot to mention. Not a health/religious thing - it just doesn’t happen often unless we’ve gone out (like last night!)

will put the cost on in a bit :)

Right. Have got to attend to air fryer roast - so will put costs on.

It’s cheaper than any of your guesses! Screen shot of transaction from Starling App attached.

this is due to the following caveats I should add -

  1. Absolutely no branded items. Everything “savers” including avocados, dairy etc.
  2. We don’t drink. Alcohol is zero on there
  3. We have a well stocked herbs and spices cupboard and had eggs, fruits and fish at home. But I reckon that’s often the case that we might have 1 or 2 things already in.
  4. Toddler is out of nappies and has meals at nursery
  5. Dog food is covered through separate budget and enormous bags of kibble from specialist shop
  6. And ……. I love cooking. Concocting random recipes from what’s at home is a post work stress buster.

it came to £62.41. If you have the time (!!) and zoom in to the individual items and price up the savers version If it it will add up.

screengrab attached!

A lot of money for very little meat and shopping overall. Morrisons is ridiculously overpriced.

fancreek · 06/08/2023 13:41

I was going to say £70 without being able to see the amounts so seems right to me. I mean thats a decent price for a family of four for the week!

Fileexplorerrrr · 06/08/2023 13:41

😳 Wow.

We have a similar shop to you and our Tesco shop this morning came to £121.

I mentally totalled it around £65-70 without knowing how many of everything/brands.
Our weekly shop is twice that, but we've got 3 hungry teens!

Combusting · 06/08/2023 14:19

Good guesses from those guessing 60-70!

so we try to do the basic meal shop this way in the 60-70 region and tend to keep an additional £15-20 budget a week for some fancy top ups like any extra meat/fishmongers visit at 5-6 pm pre nursery pick reductions time etc and generally tend to find some nice top up fish/meat that way.

I looked at the picture only and was going to say £72

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/08/2023 17:50

Well done though - I think you all eat well . Particularly your 8 year old's packed lunches !

tinytemper66 · 06/08/2023 17:56

£175

TheVelvetOnion · 06/08/2023 17:58

Ooft I was going to say about £40-£45 going by your list and comparing it to all those items I buy at my local Aldi 🤣 It's not a lot at all.

LizzieSiddal · 06/08/2023 18:03

I had got to £60 before you told us. Think it’s good value for money.

We’ve recently started eating much less meat, and it’s considerably reduced our bills.

Smartiepants79 · 06/08/2023 18:07

About £70 when I add it up. Difficult because you have not said how many of anything!

Combusting · 06/08/2023 19:40

All great guesses! We don’t eat much red meat by choice, and I tend to make a lot of paneer from milk (Indian grandma’s technique with milk and lemon juice) - so Meat Free Mondays often become paneer Mondays and paneer Tuesdays etc. my son also really loves salmon - so frozen salmon packs tend to produce teriyaki salmon noodles and salmon fish pies couple times a week too. Rest of the week tends to be chicken drums, thighs etc I find. I’m sure if we had more red meat the shop would be higher.

then again though we do buy red meat off butchers/supermarkets around just before nursery pick up sometimes when reductions are on - so it does feature but not more than once or twice a week maybe.

naopies, alcohol or more meat would definitely push it further up, if we had those to add.
