If people can save their child benefit then why do they get it?I used child benefit to subsidise packed lunch and school trips!

I agree. It should be means tested x

Child benefit is means tested

I'm currently saving for:

Car insurance due in May & MOT - £50pm. Will reduce that to the expected cost divided by 11 after May.
My gym membership that I have to pay for 3m at a time. I used some of my christmas bonus to pay for this one and will put the money away each month so its there next time - £50pm.
Christmas presents - £40pm for 10 months, money willbe there by November to order in plenty of time.
Christmas food shopping - £20pm, aiming for around £200.
January money - can you tell we suffered this xmas 😂- Will add what I can as & when.
I'm going to start another pot for an inflatible kayak for the summer.
I micro save, so put all my odd .37's ec into a pot too.

It sort of is, albeit very ineptly. Although the idea that it could ever be tested via 'need' is fanciful when parents will have such massively varying costs.

Personally I think it should be universal, and our household have taken steps to ensure we remain eligible despite one parent earning above 50k.

So you are defrauding the taxpayer then? Nice.

If you can afford to save it, you should decline it and make the pot bigger for those with fuck all.

We use it for family holidays (not abroad, just uk trips/festivals etc ) but do a sort of reverse saving where we wop it on the credit card then use the CB to pay it off.

I’ve got savings for a car replacement, funds in case I get made redundant, holiday for this year. I’ve got a work pension and top up another pension as getting the tax back is the best interest rate I’m going to get, and it gets me below the £50k child benefits limit (which won’t go down well here).

@InnocentAndDeranged i am guessing @PinkCherryBlossoms was referring to pension contributions and nothing at all to do with defrauding the tax payer, otherwise described as putting aside for her retirement to save the tax payer money.
