Council Tax 2 adults

Hi, all qq about Council Tax. In short, father passed away, who dealt with the CT side of things. I own the house but have been travelling for work, coming back regularly etc.

Now as the bill was in both their names, I understand CT is applicable to at least 2 adults in an address - if correct? The records are been updated to now reflect me and my mother living there fully (taken deceased father off). I believe they were getting a discount due to age, but i need to call them to check. Is that all above board now? Or is CT affected if more than 2 adults lived there (which i did.more during pandemic/during periods of freelance etc) I've supplied them with a mortgage deed proving property is mine, but parents paid CT if I paid mortgage, basically.

Thanks if anyone is more of an expert at this than me! Bethany x

Hi op, sorry for your loss. It’s per property (based on perceived property value) but you can get single person discount if living alone. Not sure about she related discount. It does not increase the more adults live at a property.

age related 🤦🏻‍♀️ Not she related! Apologies!

As above, CT is charged per property based on notional capital value c1991. The Council decides the Band D charge, the others are fractions or multiples of that.

There is a discount of 25% if there is only one adult living there. Some adults, such as most students, are disregarded. For example my partner was doing a full time postgrad course. Two of us here but the student disregard meant I was treated as sole occupier; 25% discount.

Other disregarded people include those with Severe Mental Impairment, Carers etc. The bill or Council's website should set these out in detail.

There are no universal discounts wholly related to old age - though obviously Mental Impairment due to Dementia becomes more common as people age.

There is a discount for low income via a Council Tax Reduction (CTR) Scheme. This is considerably more generous to Pensioners than those of working age.

The bill should show the Band, the amount the Council(s) charge and any discounts. CTR may show there too.

Thankyou so much! Appreciated. Just trying to streamline paperwork and that. I declared myself, so hopefully that is fine x

Tysm for responding! I see, thanks I was worried they would hit me with a fine/backdate me as it was only my parents paying.

Thought they might ask why I didn't contribute, as i thought it is based on 2 adults, because I understood that's how it was worked out (not counting the non-eligible list!) Thanks x
