Car insurance help

I have been a named driver on my DH's policy for over 35 years. This means I have not built up any NCB although I drive regularly.

We are thinking of getting a new policy in my name with them as named driver. I could then hopefully get some NCB.

Any insurers who would give me a discount as we've had no accidents or claims?

Im sure that as a named driver insurance companies now let you claim NCD, i think i read upto 3 years. I would start with a comparison website and see what that throws up.

UsingChangeofName · 23/06/2023 13:00

We had this (the other way round) .
dh had been named on my policy for 30+ years, but they still made him start as if he had 0 years NCD.
Still wanted to know about a claim we'd had to make when someone drove into us though.
As ever, the insurance companies want it all their own way.

Ask for some quotes. Not just on the comparison sites but brokers and the outfits who don't use Meerkat etc sites.

You'll almost certainly find that, provided you've no adverse driving history or convictions they'll give you 'starter discounts' and similar which will give you a reasonable premium while you build up no claims in yourown right.

Ages since we did this when we needed a second car, maybe 25 years+ ago, and I think brokers, Swinton(?) came up trumps.

missmollygreen · 24/06/2023 16:41

Whats the point? Your OP reads that you are just doing it to get some NCB for yourself, not because you have a second car so will have a second insurance policy with you as the main driver.
In which case you would be just making the insurance policy for more expensive for no reason. Your husbands NCB will disappear after 2 years of not being used.
So unless there is more to it than your OP suggests, I wouldnt bother

The point is that I do most of the driving and I'm worried it could be used as a get out in case of an accident.

Keep it how it is.
There's nothing to be held against you incase of an accident.

Unless it comes out that the OP does most of the driving.
The 'main driver' is noted by insurance companies.
Pretending that is someone other than who it actually is, is fraudulent. Known as 'fronting' and more usually done to allow youngsters / inexperienced drivers to afford a policy, but the same applies at any point on any policy.

Sunshineclouds11 · 26/06/2023 15:51

You can be a named driver but classed as the main driver.
So depends what the OP has put herself down as.

zippitydoda · 26/06/2023 16:41

@Sunshineclouds11 I'm a named driver. OH is down as main driver. I find I'm driving more now, which is the concern. We do state I use it for commuting but he drives most of the rest. Lately I've done the driving.

This isn't fronting, just the way life has taken us. But why I'm concerned now.

Just inform the insurance that you're now the main driver, you don't need to swap policy holder. It shouldn't make a difference since you've been named driver for so long, but it covers the situation you're now in. I have a car that my son uses most, it's insured in my name as I have 20+ years no claims, he's down as main driver, it's about £100 more per year than if I was main driver as he's only 25 and has some points 😡. Our second car my partner is policy holder, but I'm down as main driver as I drive it more! So we're all covered legally and the insurance have the full picture so no way to get out of any payments! It's really easy to do, if you're insurance company has an online portal you can usually make the change there in minutes.

@Lizzt2007 thank you thank you thank you. Didn't think of this at all.

Do you know if I will gain no claims, or still policy holder?

Still policy holder, however as others have said some insurance companies will credit no claims to a named driver.
