Empty fridge

It's so depressing opening the fridge and seeing 1 tub of stork and some milk and nothing else. Why does everything have to be such a struggle?
I have £20 until friday for food for 7people. Then £50 for food for the month as my husband got paid 3 times in the last assessment period meaning £1k deductions so it only just covers bills. His wages have already gone on his bills so we're screwed for the month. I hate getting paid monthly. Weekly was much better for budgeting. I feel like I'm always gonna be skint and struggling. If I get a job we won't be better off as that leads to more costs and then deductions.

Can you use the olio app to get free food or go to a food bank?

Olio app...you can post in the wanted section...

In the food section they have volunteers who lost food from Tesco and Iceland mainly after 6pm and 9pm. Keep checking.

How many hours does your hubby work? Sound stupid but there's 7 of us and my hubby dropped his hours to 25 and now we get rent etc all paid and are better off that way. Pay day always end of month for uc and his wage, the bills also go out same time and what's left is shopping and going out or whatever

It does sound stupid. I’m not blaming you personally but no wonder this country is fucked.

It's a disgrace that the system rewards people for working less to support 5 kids isn't it?!

@MrsSamR

Totally agree, the system is flawed and there are some people who take advantage of this.

This isn’t the best advice in the world, tbh.

Do you have a community fridge near you? I go to mine when we are broke. It's hard when you have a big family too.

Things I find help is getting say 12 Bananas once a week so every child gets a banana rather than 1 kid eating 2 so one gets none. They feel less deprived that way. I also got butter etc much cheaper in Costco but appreciate you need the £100 in the first place to bulk buy.

I find it crazy that a person is allowed to drop hours if 2 parents and then gets rent paid and other benifits

If two parents then one should be out working full time and ideally the other working part time/evening shifts at sains -cleaning - behind bar etx and not screwing the system

I know it's not the posters fault
But seems very Wrong to allow this

Holly03 · 15/09/2023 15:04

You wouldn't be worse off. Uc is now designed so that this isn't the case, being on benefits makes you worse off. If you can I would go to work even if it's just part time on a night doing bar work whilst your husband is home. This will help with childcare as well as improving your finances
