My son wants to move in with his girlfriend who is pregnant. Is it fair to charge rent and if so how much would be reasonable?

You are very naive if you believe that the fact if being pregnant gets you to the top of the social housing list. Couples in this situation, in work, are expected to house themselves with the backup of Universal Credit if their joint income falls below the minimum threshold

It depends what their plans are, too. Stay with you for a couple of months until they find somewhere to rent? I'd let them save.

Still be with you when the baby starts school? They need to be paying a fair adult share.

You need to provide more information but I would say yes you charge them and the going rate for a double room in a HOM in my town is £800 bills included but not food so I'd add on £75 a week for food. If you want to help them out maybe charge them a bit less.

i didnt say Top of the List.
just to get on the list seems reasonable.

Anyone can apply to be in the social housing register. You are given a priority band depending on your circumstances. Even the people in the highest need priority band can wait for years to be housed in something other than a bed & breakfast or hostel. Or shipped to the other end of the country. This couple will never be in the highest priority band.

It’s a bit hard to say without knowing more. I assume they both work full time and that the baby’s mum will return to work once mat leave is over. On that basis I’d charge them nothing or just the extra they cost in terms of electricity etc, expecting them to be saving to move into rented accommodation in the short term.

Id see it differently if they weren’t working or weren’t saving for their own place.

talk about them getting their own place, if you make them “ homeless “ the council will house them, pay their rent through Housing benefit and have them sign onto universal credit, they will get what they are entitled to in support and you will have less of a financial burden

Seriously ?
Do you think there are 1000s of empty council houses ? Why would you encourage two people who are working to claim benefits ?
