Hey so I've just found out my energy company hasn't been billing us for gas since January, only electricity and I didn't realise. the last estimate was 1039kw and I've just given a reading at 1045kw. I have to pay back the useage, is this going to be a massive bill? I have no idea what any of this means unfortunately but I'm so worried. Thank you

What units are on your meter? It's usually m3 or ft3, not in kwh for gas, then the energy company convert it to kwh. If it's only 6 m3 then that will be about 66kwh or about £7, if in ft3 it will be about three times that. Sounds like the previous estimate was an overestimate.

Okunevo · 17/05/2023 12:43

Sorry, plus the standing charges for the period.

babypleasenow · 17/05/2023 12:44

Okay so I've checked with them and they said last reading was 00623 m3 and I've now got a reading of 01045 m3 ? Does this make more sense ? Xxx @Okunevo

Have you been billed based on an estimate since the last reading?

Doggymummar · 17/05/2023 12:47

Multiply the difference by the amount per unit and add the standing charges.

Nope not been billed for gas at all since Jan, not even an estimate

Have you been paying by direct debit? Are you sure they haven’t been charging you for electricity, not just that you haven’t had an updated meter reading? If your last bill showed an estimated reading, they billed you based on that and it won’t be a big bill.

When did you last pay anything? In January?

What did you pay for then?

nicericey · 17/05/2023 12:52

the last estimate was 1039kw and I've just given a reading at 1045kw. were you charged for the 1039?

If you phone them they'll sort a repayment plan with you.

NoSquirrels · 17/05/2023 12:52

It sounds like you’re on quarterly bills (last paid on Jan, now 4 months is due in May). Is that right?

Yes that makes much more sense

I'm so confused but I don't want to get mugged off when I call to sort this out so I'm trying to understand, why is there two charges for electric? This was last months bill

Please help if you can!!

If you haven't been billed at all for gas since January then the calculator I posted is coming out as £550 (assuming 120 days).

Hard to read but it's for two different date periods. I often get that if I've given them a reading at a random point in the month

They've just split the period as rates changed slightly at the beginning of April.

The picture is blurry, but it looks like it covers 2 periods, probably based on when the rate per unit changed

Pip1402 · 17/05/2023 12:59

This has just happened to me. No gas payment was taken from my account since January because they hadn't had a meter reading since then. However, they had continued to take a monthly amount from me which was enough to cover both gas and electricity, so my account had ended up in credit and when they did finally take the gas payment last week I didn't actually need to pay anything extra.

Could that be the case here? Do you know what your account balance is and whether you have any credit?

Floralnomad · 17/05/2023 13:03

If you are on quarterly billing then they won’t have charged you ,because you pay it every 3 months . If you are on a monthly DD surely you realised it wasn’t going out or do you never check your bank account .

nicericey · 17/05/2023 13:05

Why would gas be quarterly but electic monthly though?

babypleasenow · 17/05/2023 13:14

So for the last theee months I was told my estimated bill will be £100 but I didn't have to pay it all because of the government scheme, so I only paid 25 towards it and then that scheme stopped so I paid the full amount last month but now they're saying I haven't paid for gas

OP posts:
Floralnomad · 17/05/2023 13:28

The govt £67 was on the electric bill , nothing to do with gas .

whowhatwerewhy · 17/05/2023 13:46

Do you have the e on next app . Can look through old statements on there to see when they last took gas payments?

I get very similar 👌

1045m3 Latest Reading minus 623m3 Previous Reading = 422m3 of Gas Used
422m3 Converted to kWh = Approx 4800kWh
10.3p/kWh Gas Price x 4800kWh = ~£495

So around £500 of pure usage, not including your daily standing charge.

BMW6 · 19/05/2023 10:57

I've calculated your gas bill would be around £500 including standing charges based on 100 days.
