And if you have a nectar card, get the app and apply your discount codes every week.

Ringmaster27 · 17/05/2023 07:32

I shop at Aldi every week.
Theres me, 3 DCs and 2 cats.
I try to buy meats that I can make 2 meals out of - this week a whole chicken for a roast and a curry, a big pack of mince for a lasagne and a shepherds pie.
I buy their wonky fruit, and pretty much only buy frozen veg.
I’m averaging about £60-£65 per week.

Another vote for the Too Good To Go app!! Am collecting a bag of groceries from Morrisons today for £3... obviously its pot luck but a big bag of stuff for 3 quid is still big savings for me 😀 then would say Lidl/Iceland/Aldi for other bits if you dont have time to constantly price check stuff in supermarkets xx

AssertiveGertrude · 17/05/2023 07:44

Lidl for me is the cheapest option

also careful planning (I never throw out food)
so if I’ve lots veg left over I roast it and freeze it and use that another day as an accompaniment for example

I buy meat offers in the butcher also but I know it’s good quality meat

if I was struggling (and have in the past) I would stretch meet out with lentils and tins of tomatoes - is there anyway to top up your income at all ? I know times are so hard

I find online shopping and meal planning batter value than going to a physical store.

If you are close to a store (I.E can travel for free) then go in the evening to find reduced items for the freezer. Don’t be afraid to buy from the deli counter either, that way you can orde £2 of X meat.

How old are your DC’s?
A large chicken barely covers us for 1 meal and a large pack mince only covers one meal too. Although my D’C’s are 11-14 and have DH also.

I've got a preschooler and a toddler, DP and a dog and we're the same as you with the chicken. A large pack of mince could probably make 2 meals if we were making a dish like spag Bol or chilli.

If you can afford the initial outlay (and have a bit of storage space) it's worth seeing if you have a cash and carry near you. Some will require you to be part of a trade or a charity/business to have an account but I've definitely saved loads by bulk buying things I use a lot of. So I always bulk buy washing tabs and dishwasher tabs and also a few trays of meat (chicken/mince etc) which can then be frozen. Saves about 30% overall.

Obviously not always possible for everyone but sometimes it's possible to bulk buy (for cheaper) on Amazon too.

stillbejeweled · 17/05/2023 08:39

Just an update on blue light discount at Asda. It's no longer 10% off your shop, they add the money to your rewards account so you have to open one of those as well.

It’s just gets so much more expensive as they get older. My 3 are pretty much eating adult portions now. Whole chicken breasts or 3 sausages each for the boys for sure. And even then they are hungry an hour later and want toast etc. The largest pack of mince just about does us one meal. All the kids are skinny too so I don’t know where it all goes!

I went into Morrisons on my Amazon app, thought I'd need an emergency order and didn't use it. Today I have been sent 3 x £15 off a shop of £60 (I'm assuming connected). I don't know how the prices stack up, but I'm going to look into that.
Also places like hello fresh throw discounts at new people. Might be worth seeing if you can get some cheaper meals that way?
I tend to use Sainsburys. I'm going to mix it up though as I get virtually no coupons any more.

Just to add I think you need to shop around and know the prices.

I googled the price of arborio rice and it was significantly cheaper in Tesco than Asda but I know other things it will be the other way round.

We like anchovies but I buy those from
Aldi as I know they are best value there.

If you have the means (storage and time and transport) you can get the best deals but you have to have a good knowledge of the different prices!

Arborio rice shocked me. Morrisons own was over £3 for 500g, I couldn't believe it!

Another possible option is finding out where in your area there are Community Meals, or Pay as you can meals.
I know of 3 places (2 Churches and one Community Centre) that offer these each week, that I could walk to, and another 3 that are a short bus ride from here).

There is no referral or criteria or checking who is "entitled" - anyone is welcome to go and have a hot, 2 course meal at all of them if you wanted to, each week. The 3 nearest are Mon evening, Thurs evening and Sunday lunch. The 3-4 miles away are Tues daytime, Wed daytime and Friday evening, so you and your family could eat out almost every day (if around in the day) if you needed to. But even if there aren't so many near you, one meal a week would help. Smile

Iceland email you codes if you use online shopping, I had £8 off £50 last weekend and that was quite good as you could also use the e.g. 3 for £5 promotions and free delivery, got a shop with that

Then also been using a code with Waitrose which is £22 off £100 which was found with a thing called Coupert, an app you can use there is also one called Honey

I use these to find me codes then shop accordingly. I don't drive.

So I've now booked online slots with Waitrose for the next few weeks and found codes saving over £80 off.
