If fuel is coming down will food prices follow

The Petrol and diesel prices are falling quite fast here, down to £1.43 & £1.53 a litre today which a big drop from where it was. It's giving me some hope to be honest that things might be looking up. I know the costs involved in transporting food was adding to the price increases so wondered if any one else if hopeful groceries may also come down or do you think the supermarkets will add to their already inflated profits 🤔

I think a report by the major supermarkets to the govt this week indicated that food prices had peaked and would like stabilise and begin to fall over the coming months. Although I'd be very pleasantly surprised if they do actually fall to a noticeable point.
I won't hold my breath.

No, they will just go up by less.

With interest rates keep rising, companies will still have higher cost that will be passed on.

We need to get used to higher food prices as I doubt they will ever go down to what they were. And as much as we all fed up with Brexit we are still waiting for a of rules and regulations to come fully in to force which also add to the cost and availability of food which we import.

It depends what you expect from a reduction in prices. Some items might drop from the peak but they're still going to be more expensive than they were a year or two ago. We won't see deflation in food prices, just a slowing of inflation. The end of this year is going to be another crunch point, as @Clutterbugsmum has pointed out we'll then see the effect of UK border controls on imported food stuffs. So far the UK has been repeatedly kicking that can down the road, but it's now runout of road.

Supermarkets don't operate at huge profit margins, they make quite slim margins on a very large amount of sales.

I've just done an asda shop, prices were already lower on quite a few bits

CatsOnTheChair · 13/05/2023 11:54

Petrol went up here last week - but still lower than the figures you quoted.

I noticed butter was 1.89 in sainsbury last week when I bought it after being 1.99 for months. I didn't notice other stuff

no.
there is more to food production than fuel price.
weather and animal health (avian flu) also play a big role.
not to mention the situation around ukraine/belarus/russia...
