When are the energy bills going down?

So the government has stopped the £60 p/m towards the energy bills this month because they say the prices are decreasing now. This month ours has doubled, so that's a load of old bollocks is it?! What is everyone else's bill like now?

I thought I read they expect it to reduce from June onwards. but then we won't be using the heating anyway 🙄

ThisSingleMama · 04/05/2023 19:22

I don't think they are due to go down on any meaningful way!

We just won't be using as much on heating

I think the prices are here to stay now

dementedpixie · 04/05/2023 19:22

They are predicted to come down a little around June but I doubt they will come back down by that much. The £67 stopped because they didn't want to subsidise our bills any longer, not because bills were going to drop.

MigGirl · 04/05/2023 19:22

The wholesale price has already dropped our energy supplier Octopus has already changed our tariff (not massively yet). They did say they hoped it would fall below goverment cap prices by June.

But yes we have had bigger bills.

mnahmnah · 04/05/2023 19:23

I got a message today that our bill is going up £50 extra a month. On top of what we would be paying without the £60 a month over winter. So actually more than double what we have been paying. I went on the app and just changed the amount. So we’ll be paying £10 a month more instead. Should even back out over summer and then we’re moving house, so we should be in credit

Fudgewomble · 04/05/2023 19:23

Ours was £1000. Ouch.

Nimbostratus100 · 04/05/2023 19:25

why would they come down? Fossil fuel is insecure and unsustainable - that has been known for half a century. Bills will continue to rise overall, until we switch to renewables, once the switch is complete, they will rise less

greensquirrel · 04/05/2023 19:26

Nobody on this thread is being clear - do you mean estimated use or the actual bill for your actual use?

Jolenetookmyman · 04/05/2023 19:26

They are likely to go up as there is still a energy price guarantee paid by the Govt for us. On my bills the Govt are crediting 16p per unit for Electricity. They will be phasing this out this year, I think July? That will sting hard.

We mean price per/kwh and standing charge are supposed to reduce

If you use more you will still pay more

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/05/2023 20:06

I’d like to know when the sodding daily standing charge can go back to reasonable!!

OddBoots · 04/05/2023 20:10

The price cap for the quarter from 1st July will be announced on the 26th of May - hopefully it will be lower.

MayThe4th · 04/05/2023 20:15

Mine has gone from £207 pm to £126. My parents’ bill has halved.

I’m with EDF, they’re with British Gas.

Do you mean the direct debit has changed?
That could be due to having a credit balance or using less. The underlying price will not have changed

Because it is warmer so you are using less for heating?

wizbit93 · 04/05/2023 20:25

We're with OVO and our unit rate has gone down this month but the standing charge up.

BMW6 · 04/05/2023 20:54

My gas and electric for April is half of what they were in previous winter months

whirlyhead · 04/05/2023 20:57

My actual bill for April was a lot lower than March and my prices have come down - I checked the tariffs. I’m still £700 in credit. But I’m with a very expensive green energy provider that is exempt from the price cap so my prices have always been higher.

The £67 stopped because winter is over, and energy use is much lower in summertime.

Cupcakequeen75 · 04/05/2023 21:10

Bills will be coming down due to it being warmer so no need for heating, tumble dryer etc.

Although we have DD I have been checking (and submitting) actual readings since we moved in over a year ago.
Highest months (winter of course) were £215/m all in -£66.
April was £105/m all in but of course no gov help any more.

NewBootsAndRanty · 04/05/2023 21:15

I switched to Octopus' tracker tariff in feb; unit prices are under half what I was paying on the SVR for gas, and at least a third lower for electricity.

https://octopus.energy/help-and-faqs/articles/what-is-octopus-tracker-and-how-do-i-join/

There's a waiting list but it's worth it.

NoNamesLeft371 · 04/05/2023 21:21

Greedy bastards will probably keep the prices we have now.

1dayatatime · 04/05/2023 21:31

Gas prices will come down when the war in Ukraine ends / a peace deal.

Bubbles254 · 04/05/2023 21:32

Given that natural gas prices and come down substantially and are now at 2021 levels you woyld expect UK gas prices to follow in the next few months (if we are not getting completely ripped off).
