How much do most people pay monthly?
We've just been told our direct debit needs to increase to 330 pounds a month!
We live in a tiny three bed semi and have cavity wall insulation and double glazing

£80, small three bed semi, two people, low usage.

3dogsandarabbit · 16/04/2023 14:10

It all depends on how much energy you are using. I give monthly meter readings so that I know exactly how much I am using each month.

feellikeanalien · 16/04/2023 14:15

Well I've just had an email from my electricity provider saying that when my fixed rate ends at the end of the month I will be paying double what I am paying now.

Looks like it will be £90 per month for a tiny two bed terraced cottage with thick walls and double glazing. Only two of us in the house and the central heating is oil.

Strangely enough my income will not be going up at all to cover this!

Okunevo · 16/04/2023 14:15

Do you have a yearly estimate on a recent bill? Just add any debt or subtract any credit, and divide by 12. That will likely be an overestimate as prices should come down a bit.

dementedpixie · 16/04/2023 14:15

We pay £280ish (was £220 before the £67 stopped) for a 4 bed in Scotland with 2 adults and 2 teens. Actual usage last month was about £340. Hopefully that should reduce as it gets warmer outside

Okunevo · 16/04/2023 14:19

Calculator here, though it won't take into account debt or credit. Your yearly usage should be on your bill.

FlutterbButterfly · 16/04/2023 15:42

£350 per month. Mid size 4 bed detached newish build. 4 adults (adult children) No one works from home. Barely have the heating on. So should be lowish users but we have an EV

Phillipa12 · 16/04/2023 15:56

I've just upped my dd to £200 per month. Octopus wanted £250 till I pointed out I was still £705 in credit and have just turned off my heating. I and my 3dc live in an 1820s cottage with thick walls, double glazing and a log burner, even in Jan we only spent £300.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/04/2023 16:00

Have you come out winter with debt?

Use the calculator above to work out whether it's fair.

Your estimated usage should be on your bill. What are your showering and laundry habits like? That can add to the cost.

newjobnewstartihope · 16/04/2023 16:11

So even though to me it's wildly expensive it's kind of reassuring it's not unusual
It's the biggest monthly expense after the mortgage!

CornishTiger · 16/04/2023 16:15

It really depends how much KWH you are using per day. Ours is 17kwh for electric and we have gas heating. It is KWH you need to look at and see if yours is average usage or too high and need to reduce it.

Don't compare your DD to others, that's completely meaningless, you need to work out your annual cost from your usage and the ratea youre paying. Your DD should be around 1/12th of that total

Greensleevevssnotnose · 16/04/2023 16:18

£330 now for April it was double this in Winter. 2 people 2 bed bungalow

Disco2023 · 16/04/2023 16:22

Ours is £120 a month. It’s been pretty accurate over winter. We’ve used the £200 credit we had though.
We are low users. We used to be well under £50 usage in the summer months. Even in winter we don’t have high heat: 17/18 a few hours a day when cold.

What annoys me is the every increasing standing charges!

Okunevo · 16/04/2023 16:23

Exactly. Look at your own usage and use the calculator to check you are being charged the right amount.

Okunevo · 16/04/2023 16:27

If it works out that you are being charged correctly then it does look high for your house size, though you don't say if you are a couple, or if you have four children in the house! The average is £2500 a year, so just over £200 a month.

EmotionalSupportWyrm · 16/04/2023 16:30

mine has just been recalculated - I had a few months where I was paying v little as I was in a lot of credit. From April it will £224 on DD. £134 Electric £90 gas.

3 bed, modern house (late 90's) well insulated.

I'm at home most of the time, so the heating was on during the day throughout winter.

Itawapuddytat · 16/04/2023 19:43

It is £285 now for a 3 bedroom end of terrace, 2 adults, one teenager, one child. We came out of the winter with a fiver in credit after "balancing the books" at the beginning of March, so Scottish Power has estimated the direct debit correctly so far. We were quite careful with the usage of gas and electricity, but we were not cold this winter, we put the heating on when the thermometers went below 18 degrees in the house (we usually try to keep it between 18-20 degrees)

User1794537 · 16/04/2023 19:51

What is your estimate for the year, maybe you have been underpaying so it needed to go up to compensate, that happened to us.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 16/04/2023 19:53

Same op! We pay £110 a month and it's not touching the sides. We are now over 1k in debt!!

But over summer our usage will reduce a lot. We can't afford ,£300 but will increase to £200 and see if that makes a dent by the end of sept.

It's horrific!

Curlygirl06 · 16/04/2023 22:36

3 bed, 2 adults, no wfh. Double glazing, gas central heating, don't have the heating on much as we don't feel the cold. Dh works full time, I'm very part time.
We pay £200 per month, which I put the dd up to last year. I read the meters each month and calculate the bills myself, as we only get a bill every 6 months (EDF). At the moment we are about £56 in credit, and as we've turned the heating off completely and hopefully will use less electric now the evenings are lighter, the next month should be similar.

DarlingG · 16/04/2023 22:40

Three bed and paying £330 but that’s only for electric. We have oil for heating which is £1000 for the winter too, I’m guessing we’ll need that twice a year. It’s ridiculous how expensive it has all got! I’m about to go on maternity leave and that’s most of my SMP gone on just heating the house, luckily I have a partner who earns too but he’s having to cover the mortgage which unexpectedly doubled as well 🙄

DiscoBeat · 16/04/2023 22:42

Around £400 a month for electricity and around £300 a month for oil (oil fired boiler). 4-bed with separate annexe and electric car.

Abcdefgh1234 · 16/04/2023 23:38

£260 direct debit per month. Actual usage on march its £230z but on december we used £400. Its 4 bedroom semi detached in cambridge
