Happy big birthday to your mum life catering is always tiring, but mostly satisfying too.
need how fantastic of your dh to read the eulogy with your dc by his side. Good that you won't have to see the inlaws again for a while.
girlie I'm with you on the teen years, but hope your dd had a good birthday happier & that maintenance comes in v soon
rum Paris sounds great. Dd is doing French A level & continuing at uni & loves Paris.
Mrs glad your mum is settled
Lovely to see new people on the thread
This week has been good spending wise, no takeaways or meals out. I was back in the cricket club kitchen so that has been good as I've come home with some surplus food.
Dh has gone down to Plymouth & won't be back until a week today. His team are hopefully on the brink of promotion & have 3 home matches in a week so he's at his parents & working from home. Dd has her first A level this week so not great timing by dh but I wouldn't want him to miss it. I'm going to take dd out for tea on Tuesday after the exam. Our new(ish) Mowgli is her choice.
Feeling quite flat and teary at times this weekend, too many different stresses going on at work & home/family. Doing dad's health power of attorney doc today so that we can get that signed off & going to write up details of our concerns about dad to take to the GP tomorrow. It's all stuff I can't discuss in front of him.
Reality is hitting home about the cost of dd going to uni in September. We've said we will pay for her rent, so now trying to figure out how to find £600 a month with me having gone back to 4 days a week, but we'll do it. Frugal skills will be crucial!

Timetoswitch · 23/04/2023 09:37

Welcome newbies

What a lovely surprise em, hope you had a good night!

Rum trip to Paris sounds amazing, I can’t wait until life is flexible enough to allow something like this!

We’ve redone the budget, and it’s ok.

I’ve been sorting through the DC clothes and removing the too small stuff. You can actually get in the drawers/see what is in the wardrobe now.

Well done to your DH need, and for getting through it yourself with the family stress.

Big hug north Flowers that really is a lot to be managing x

BigSkies2022 · 23/04/2023 10:04

Another household (well, 3 - us, my brother and my parents) watching how the mighty Argyle's season ends here, north. Will they do it this time, or will they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory once more?? Come on, you Pilgrims!

As for French - I have spent so many years studying, and some of my skills are at a good level. But, despite all my study and even living there for a couple of years, my speaking skills are crap. So, with two trips coming up this year, I have decided to tackle this. The best resource I have found so far is a method put forward by a YouTuber.

You need a foothold first, it's not for beginners, and it involves filming yourself telling a story in French and playing back; using DeepL and Anki (both free) to translate and record new sentences and vocab, setting up a Google sheet and basically getting serious about it for an hour a day. There's an even more intense programme which he followed during lockdown and although I can't do that, it does have elements which I can add once I'm really up and running with this exercise. I have five months before the first trip, so I think this is a realistic timespan

This One Exercise Made Me Fluent In French (In 30 Days!)

If you want to know what the best method for language learning is or how to get fluent in french, this is a beginner-friendly method for developing speaking ...

BigSkies2022 · 23/04/2023 10:14

I feel you on the university costs, north. £600 a month is about what I need to find and explains why many of my hobbies/activities are focused on YouTube resources and the local library!

northender · 23/04/2023 15:30

Oh wow Big, more of the Green Army!! Half's dad was another. It's got such a great feel this season, I really hope they do it. If they do then it will be first time in a while that our teams have played each other. They are always big occasions for us as we get an influx of Plymouth friends & family for the game up here & for the game there we all go down & some of our friends from up her. Years ago ds was the away mascot in both games as it was free so long as he had a kit (he genuinely supports both teams!)

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 23/04/2023 18:02

Have had a quiet day today, dd has been out with her bfriend, my mums away and friends all busy so took the dog for a nice walk and stopped at cafe for bacon sandwich and cuppa £6.50.

Been pottering in the garden this afternoon.

Makes me think I need some new hobbies now that dd is off doing her own thing most wends.

Dds not planning on going to uni which is just as well as I definitely can't afford to help her out much 🫤

Theskyoutsideisblue · 23/04/2023 18:59

What is she planning @Girliefriendlikespuppies . Definitely look for new hobbies. What kind of thing do you have in mind

ememem84 · 23/04/2023 19:00

I’m back on the self care wagon.

have spent the day drinking a lot of water. Am currently doing a face mask to use it up.

tomorrow morning I’m going to go for a run in preparation for the “run the runway” I’m doing at the end may. I’m not a runner. So running 3.7km is a big deal for me.

the added challenge of it being on the airport runway…..

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 23/04/2023 19:58

North, Big … GREEN ARMY! I had no idea we had you too Big

I am genuinely gutted that my late dad isn’t around to see his team this season. I’d never hear the end of it, mind 😂. DMum is keeping up on team developments on his behalf, she never cared a jot while he was alive but I think she finds it comforting to follow them now ❤️

My Dad once told me he was at a home game against Exter and the Plymouth fans were shouting ‘you dirty northern B*’ , which for some reason made me laugh like a drain. I hope it was true.

I need to remember some French but that level is way beyond me!

North I am so glad your DH will get to the games! Sorry things are stressful, it’s awful confronting the reality of parents aging and needing help /care. Not just a practical stress but sadness too.

My head is all over the place, I feel as though I am standing on the edge of a cliff with this building work! One of the two builders in the running came round today and said he can bring the costs down a bit (quite a bit to save on the glazing, for instance), every little helps. He needs a week or so to come back to me with a revised cost but would want to start asap, as he has a gap between now and October. He can start with the loft conversion, from outside, while we live in the house, but basically he need us out from June to Sept/oct to destroy the ground floor. This is tricky as I visited a few estate /lettings agents yesterday and they confirmed what I already know from Rightmove : that there is almost nothing on the rental market round here and then loads of people chasing anything that come up, and we have no hope with wanting max 6m stay.

so I’ve taken the plunge. We stay here till end May, we go on hols during half term (will book an air bnb somewhere fun for the kids), then I’ve booked an air bnb flat near us for 8 weeks, for the summer half term. Very expensive to do that on the outskirts of London but it was literally the only ‘affordable’ thing I could find. It’s not big enough for DM to stay too, which she usually does 2 nights a week, so we’re going to have to figure that out… also kids will need to share a room, which they never have, and there’s no bath (thy don’t like showers)… and it cost over £7k, but we have to live somewhere. During august we’re in France for 2 weeks and the rest of the time we’ll stay with PILs (they have offered but it’s only possible in the school hols and they’re not local). No idea what we’ll do in September but if necessary we’ll have to move back home to the building site. Sigh.

On other spends, I’m getting DH to convert our recent zoo visit into membership for the year. We will need to get our much more at weekends than we usually do, when it’s a mess / we’re in a smaller space. Think that’s about £115 extra. Cheap online shop this week, under £100, because we’re desperately trying to use stuff up. My kitchen is still rammed with ingredients though!

BigSkies2022 · 23/04/2023 20:53

Way to go, Half! You've bitten the bullet, big-time, on the build. Sounds massively demanding on logistics and nerves, but it will be worth it to get the house you need.

Don't know if I can bear to watch the Pilgrims. Wake me up when it's over.

At the min dd is talking about working to save money and then looking to travel.

I have no clue re hobbies, any ideas?

marthasmum · 23/04/2023 21:06

Girlie I can relate to this. My DCs are all a bit more independent now (youngest is 14, oldest nearly 19) and I’ve got a bit more spare time but feel like I’ve forgotten how to spend time enjoying myself or doing things just for me. I’ve spent some time catching up with friends I’ve not seen for ages as I have more time and energy to be social
and make contacts with people. Other than that, not really sure but just wanted to say I relate to this stage of life!

life I’m glad to hear it gets better😆
rum Paris sounds lovely!
need there’s 21 months between my 2 and it has been quite difficult. But I’m glad we’ve had them close together.
em what a nice surprise! I hope you enjoyed yourself
north I’m sorry to hear that things are tough💐
half that sounds like a lot to be managing but at least you have a plan going forward
girlie love the pics!

Quite a spendy weekend but I’m hoping to do as many free activities with the DC as possible next week. The forecast is saying rain/thunderstorms for most of the week so lots of rainy day activities.
$159.31 weekly shop
$52.53 trip to museum yesterday
$52.54 meal yesterday

Happierwithouthim · 24/04/2023 06:04

Maintenance appeared in my account this morning phew, that was not something I wanted to get into.

€31.90 in SuperValu using €5 off €35 voucher, had to buy two packs of chewing gum at till to bring it up to over €35.

Got €38 back from vhi so exchanged it for Canadian dollars $55.80

ememem84 · 24/04/2023 06:58

half we did that last year when we had our building work done. We moved to a winter let at a self catering resort here. Annoyingly ended up having to pay “summer” rates as it ran over slightly but the summer eater were only for a week.

for What it’s worth I think you’ve made the right decision. Get the work done now. In the (hopefully) nice weather! And while there is availability.

nsd yesterday.

auming for one today too. We shall see.

lifelongfrugaleer · 24/04/2023 07:15

Brave half, still catching up but do you have somewhere to park a caravan? Can you buy one to live in them sell
it on?

lifelongfrugaleer · 24/04/2023 07:25

Phew on maintenance

and lovely pics

I find it hard to fill my time so I’m trying to teach myself crochet

BigSkies2022 · 24/04/2023 13:45

Kittens and sea views! this thread is strong today.

Upholsterer has just taken away the sofa for reupholstering. So £500 now and the final £500 balance when he delivers it back. I have been saving up and waiting for this day for over a year now. I am two weeks away from Glam Sofa after living with Sad Sofa for much too long. I don't think we will have it back in time to watch the coronation from it, but not long after.

And then come June, I can start saving for replacing the other sofa (currently propped up with bits of 2X4 from the garage).

ememem84 · 24/04/2023 14:46

£580 spent today. It was not an nsd

£20 on goggles for the kids for swimming.

£10 coffee - because we’ve run out at home

£550 flights and hotel to London for me and dsis in October half term. She will pay me half.

Happierwithouthim · 24/04/2023 15:29

€1700 paid off credit card, bf not just transferred me his share of our flights but paid half of the total cost instead. He's a keeper not just because of this! Smile

RumBananaSundae · 24/04/2023 16:57

Afternoon peeps.

Need sending you hugs for it all. Families are truly the gift that keep on giving. The funeral date has been set and I’m unfortunately not on holiday.

North good luck to your daughter for her A-levels. Sorry to hear about your life stresses too. They can be brutal.

Happier that’s a beautiful sea view.

Ememem good luck for your run. Maybe your efforts will rub off on me and I’ll try something like that. I really should.

Bigskies thank you for the videos. I will look them up. I am most definitely a beginner. I did look at tutors but they were a little pricey.

Half the building work is sounding complex. It will be worth the upheaval.

A few spends since my last post. Yesterday £3.20 something on some yellow stickered bits in Marks and Spencer. All cooked and packed into the freezer so can just be reheated. Today was £1.69 on some cottage cheese in Aldi, £2.25 on a stamp and £1.49 on a jiffy envelope.

Took some inspiration from Girlie and had a curry on Saturday evening. No spending though as I’d covered the tickets my friend paid for dinner.

Payday is this week. I’m trying to be resolute and not let the discretionary spending get out of hand like this month. Really do need to get used to not doing it.
