Have you learned to be your own hairdresser?

Has anyone taught themselves to cut their own (long) hair - or anyone else’s?

Fee up of paying ridiculous hairdressing costs for a wet cut and all it is is a trim basically!

Yes I've been cutting my own (straight) below shoulder length hair for years. It's not difficult with a decent pair of hairdresser's scissors.

Long ago my now departed mother fell on hard times and had to give up having her weekly perm (she had lovely wavy hair) and learned to cut it herself. It always looked immaculate. I've no idea how she managed to cut short, wavy hair!

I’d like to know to!

I have shortish fine curly hair (the worst combo) and could not imagine attempting to cut it myself

You aren't paying someone else. That hairdresser has a business, overheads, travel costs, experience.

I'd tip more than £8!

When my children were little we had a mobile hairdresser who came to the house and cut their hair and mine in our kitchen. Our hot water, our towels, our shampoo, our chair. I cleaned up the hair. I made her a coffee. She was in and out in well under an hour. No idea what we paid her but it was far cheaper than going to a salon and so it should have been.

I cut dh and the kids hair. Dh cuts mine. We all have fairly simple hair styles. It was nerve wracking to begin with, but we are getting the hang of it. I'm sure a salon cut would look better, but it's not something I prioritise financially as it can be done at home and we are trying to save money. I don't think we do a bad job. Dh is quite artistic, not sure I'd let him near my hair otherwise. Definitely requires some trust. We have been doing it since lockdown and must have saved quite a bit over the years. Lots of tutorials on YouTube. Keep searching them till you find something that works for you.

I started cutting mine about 10 years ago. I found going to hairdressers such an absolute sensory hell and finally realised I didn't actually have to go!
I just put it in a ponytail and lop of the end, depending on how long kids stay occupied I then try and put layers in (v inexpertly).

kirinm · 30/03/2023 18:16

I'm not sure what point you're making? Of course it's cheaper than the salon. But paying someone £8 is taking the piss.

Dh cuts mine, cheapo scissors. It was quite long but the last time he cut it shorter (by my request!) and it's fine. It is thick, wavy and now above shoulders. I don't think it looks like a home haircut but then I am not looking at a geometric asymmetric layered etc result I suggest you have a go, if you don't like it then you can go to the hairdresser for repairs. I also use to dye it myself but have now embraced the grey.

There is a cheap hairdresser near me! Takes her 10 mins to cut off the ends. If she does 4 cuts on an hour it's a good hourly rate!

I think fine curly hair would be a nightmare! Mum had thick wavy hair, even in her 60s. I did ask her how she managed to cut it so well and she said 'years of watching hairdressers cutting it'. So I guess that's it, but even so, you need good dexterity to cut the part behind your head!

Its easy with a pair of hairdressing scissors.
If I am alone, I do it the Brad Mondo way with the ponytails and if my partner is around, I just cut the front and they even up the back.
If its just a trim its pretty easy

FYI you can not get good hair cutting scissors for £2. Mine cost over £500, plus having them sent away for sharpening can cost £100's also. Our kits are expensive and the cost of haircuts reflect this.

If you're feeling the pinch with having a salon cut, try a mobile stylist after seeking recommendations. Maybe go a longer time in between cuts.

For DIY cuts I've seen some horrors and the clients thought they did a good job. If you're taking minimal off not a lot can go wrong but for big changes, layers and short hair types I wouldn't. I don't cut my own hair and nor would I ever. I have been a hair stylist for over 20 years.

Bollocks. I cut my own hair because I don't like being touched by strangers. I do a unicorn cut every 8 weeks or so with the scissors I got in Safeway when my children were little. My hair is in excellent condition.

MushMonster · 30/03/2023 20:22

Yes, we do cut our own hair.
It has been quite an adventure!

Eyesopenwideawake · 30/03/2023 20:34

I was fed up with my nondescript haircut last week and did a No. 8 all over. Hairdresser is going to be seriously unimpressed when I go to have my roots down in a few weeks!

But they're paying the price requested. They're free put up their prices.

OP there sometimes some basic salons who will do a trim for under £10.

Growlybear83 · 30/03/2023 20:48

I've been to a hairdresser once in the last 30 years, so have got used to trimming my hair when it needs it. I've always hated what they do to my hair, and hate having someone else washing it, and having to make small talk. I think I would rather go to the dentist than a hairdresser! 😆😆

Thepossibility · 30/03/2023 20:57

Yes I tend to chop into my own hair and then DH neatens the back for me. I also colour at home. I do a fringe and every thing.
I've never had a cut from the hairdresser that I was really happy with. Now I do my two DS and DD hair myself as well. DH lost his hair so shaves it himself these days.
Were not struggling for money, I just think I do a good job so why not.
