Tesco delivery minimum basket charge to rise

Unimpressed to discover this is going up from May 2nd. Minimum basket value for delivery will be £50, minimum basket charge going up to £5.

As a single parent I really value the delivery option but also don't go mad with what I spend - basically I get it just above the minimum basket cutoff (currently £40). So this is going to involve a dance to stretch out how often I shop and make it 25% less frequent, so I don't just fill up the basket with guff.

I pretty much have to stick with Tesco because I have a delivery saver plan paid for that's got most of the year to run but I fully intend to choose the most expensive delivery slot it covers, even if it's not the most convenient one for me, just to stick two fingers up at them.

Could you buy everything for the month except the weekly perishables like milk, bread, fruit and veg across three £50 shops then go to the supermarket yourself the last week to only get the perishables? Or similar. Meat can go in the freezer and things like cheese and yogurt would last long enough. It does sound annoying!

Badbudgeter · 29/03/2023 20:57

I think the £40 basket makes a loss for them by the time they pay pickers/ deliver it. Not surprised it’s going up tbh.

rwalker · 29/03/2023 21:00

Unless it’s profitable they can’t do it they need to at least break even
everything including there cost have gone up so no great surprise

Spirogyra · 29/03/2023 21:03

Haven't you been given the option to cancel the delivery saver as they are changing the terms that you signed up to? This happened years ago when l had Tesco delivery saver & the minimum went up from £25 to £40. l had the option to cancel the delivery saver plan, and get a refund on the unused but prepaid time left on it.
Hope Asda don't follow suit, they also used to have a £25 minimum but soon followed Tersco in raising it to £40, l have the same problem of often not needing to spend that much.

KylieKangaroo · 29/03/2023 21:06

I used to struggle to get up to 40 to meet the minimum spend, those were the days!

Brokendaughter · 29/03/2023 21:06

All that means is I'll just use them less & spend less there overall, especially if other shops keep theirs at £40.

But I still miss the days when the minimum shop was £25.

Twinedpeaks · 29/03/2023 21:06

How do you know about this? I have a delivery pass but not been told. What a pain, as a single household it's hard to spend above £50 a week!

GiltEdges · 29/03/2023 21:09

You do know this is nonsense right? Tesco won't remotely care which slot you choose, you'll just be inconveniencing yourself to no end Confused

Redminionpenguin · 29/03/2023 21:09

Very annoying I also have a delivery saver (till January). They've just messed with the time slots (I had the midweek saver and now the after 3pm one). I can't go to the shops as I'm disabled and so rely on this. I think I'm going to stretch the shop out to a few extra days and dc will have to have more tinned/frozen fruit and veg towards the end. I already freeze milk/bread etc. I understand why they need to do it but it doesn't help the vulnerable/low income families.

Yes, but I have to be petty somehow! 😀

I don't online shop with Tesco (I use Asda), so this is just an idea...

If the minimum order is £50, order a few pounds more. When the delivery arrives, reject enough to take you back to a comfortable amount

Asda say, 'hand back anything you don't want,' so I've always assumed this to mean it doesn't just apply to substitutions and I can change my mind about products that were actually on my order.

I haven't actually tried this out - pet food alone takes me to at least £20, so with Asda's £40 minimum, I'm always well in.

IconicKitty · 30/03/2023 08:35

How annoying. Households with 1-2 people are likely to spend £40 or less a week, so I think this is just a ploy to get people back into supermarkets (and spending more)

purser25 · 30/03/2023 08:41

Coop has a minimum spend of £15 delivery charges 1.99 and 2.99 there might even still be 99p and not everything is more expensive especially if you are a member ideal for top up or single households.

LadyJ2023 · 30/03/2023 08:44

Huh wish my shop was that low but there is 6 of us and 3 are under 2 lol, but I do get it monthly to

BeanzToastie · 30/03/2023 08:45

Assuming cash flow is not a huge problem, you only have to order a few more nonperishables or something for the freezer and bingo, there is your extra £10. Nothing is going to go to waste – you just might end up shopping slightly less frequently.

I agree. It's cutting off one's nose to spite one's face.

Chersfrozenface · 30/03/2023 09:01

I don't get deliveries often enough to have a delivery pass - it's not worth it.

With Tesco my usual slot would cost £5 for delivery, with Asda it's £2.

Because I don't have deliveries regularly the minimum spend doesn't usually bother me, but Asda's is still £40.

It's an easy choice for me.

I'm the same, I stick as close to £40 as possible. I'm not sure I want to up it. Clubcard points are decreasing, I might start looking at other options now.

Viviennemary · 30/03/2023 14:27

I don't think it's that bad actually. People can just shop less frequently.

I find it difficult to shop less than weekly as fruit and veg often don't last longer.

BotterMon · 30/03/2023 16:47

Ocado still £40 although I do wonder how anybody can get below this even on their own taking into account all household items not just food.

ParagraphOne · 07/04/2023 21:16

Odd post, I'm in the same boat as you but can understand that a £40 spend must not be profitable by the time they've paid staff to pick, deliver etc.

I'll just try to miss one week a month, buy a few groceries at the local co-op and use freezer food that week.

Hotcrossed · 08/04/2023 09:47

i havent had a delivery since they gave 10% off blue light card holders but only instore.
but with covid last week, got a delivery
however they provided no milk, it was out of stock, and no gaviscon for DH either - no subs offered
ridiculous, i ended up having to go to the local co op for milk!
what a bad service
