I'm in Paris, I just popped to the shop and got 2 steak hachés, a bottle of squash and 250g of butter. That's it - It cost me 16€12.

I checked online to see if my supermarket is taking the piss but even from carrefour which is one of the cheapest places ( and doesn't really have shops in Paris) the same would have cost 13€13.

Is steak haches minced beef? If so, £5 ish for 500g. Juice about £3 and butter £2. So £10. No idea of exchange rate.
That's co-op (only choice where I live) and I imagine bigger supermarkets in towns will be cheaper.

jizzlord · 27/03/2023 20:58

I don't know what those steak things are - burgers? Aldi would be 3.19 for specially selected steak burgers, 1.49 for squash and 2.19 for specially selected butter so 7 quid ish

I went to LA last month and I was never happier to come back to my local Sainsbury’s. I just could not believe how expensive things were in the supermarkets there. And we weren’t shopping at Whole Foods. In fact, we shopped at a range and other than Target (which had a very limited supermarket section) and even then, 6 chicken breasts were US$12 (almost £10).

My friend was buying supermarket white bread loaf for US$4.50 (£3.70) each and I made dinner and the only bunch of mint I could find was US$3.50 (£2.85!). It would have cost me 70pence in Sainsbury’s!

Eating out was no better. Not to mention the sales tax plus 20% service. We were at a beach one day, went to the ice cream shop. I bought an ice cream cone with two flavours but I upgraded to a waffle cone and it came to almost £10!

I had the below takeaway from a Hawaiian food place - teriyaki beef, rice and broccoli plus a musabi (like a giant sushi but with a piece of spam, don’t judge me, I loved it!) and plus a can of soft drink, the whole meal costs me £20! I would have paid maybe £14-15 tops for that in London…

My friend’s American husband says the coastal and big cities in the US are getting impossibly expensive!

Tesco extra special burgers x4 £4
1.5lt Oasis £1.50
Branded butter £2.50

£8 if not shopping around so €9.10

Uurrjb · 27/03/2023 21:52

The squash is branded so probably more expensive

GulfCoastBeachGirl · 27/03/2023 21:53

@TwoBoysTooMany76 Food prices are high in the US, but Los Angeles is probably one of the most expensive cities in the country so you really got the worst of it!

I think wages here are probably somewhat keeping up with inflation as consumers don't seem all that fussed by higher food prices and restaurants are booming.

But lower income people (no surprise there) are certainly struggling with these costs.

lljkk · 27/03/2023 22:00

I agree about high cost of supermarket food in USA, my experiences of CA & FL. The only thing I bought recently in France was cheese; prices were same in euros as they are in £ (per 100g) so.. only a tiny bit cheaper?

Pestispeeved · 27/03/2023 22:07

Via Ocado
£11.75 so 13.37 euro

Pestispeeved · 27/03/2023 22:07

Picture would help

I thought life was rosy in the EU and it had only gone to shit in the UK?

Isuppose · 27/03/2023 22:20

I think its what you bought OP.

Steak varies in price depending on quality. If you buy e.g. 10% fat mince, it will be cheap but bad for you. If you buy better quality and low fat meat, it will be more expensive obviously.

Butter is one product that has had price increases everywhere. Tesco butter is €7.47/kg. Irish butter is €9.45/kg. Supply issues is the reason given for the increase. Norway is supposedly nearing 'butter panic' due to low supply issues.

The juice you bought looks basic so I would imagine it shouldn't be expensive.

MegsLevante · 27/03/2023 22:26

I was in Spain recently and previously have found things cheaper there. This time - supermarket prices were pretty much the same as here. On the nights we ate out, then it was a bit cheaper than here but not by much. Petrol was slightly cheaper, about 10p a litre cheaper.

unsync · 27/03/2023 22:39

Well you did get Charal and beurre moulé. 😊 Steak haché doesn't really exist over here sadly. I would much rather pay a bit more for decent French food than less for some of the crap that passes for food over here.

BramleyAppleHotCrossBun · 27/03/2023 22:45

Food is still cheaper in the UK.

Sirop is not squash 😭😂

Mossstitch · 27/03/2023 22:56

I bought that 'sirop' from ocado on offer thinking it was high juice cordial, it is not basic, was £4 on offer and disgustingly sweet😕 their butter is £1.99 and lovely and a couple of good quality burgers (the closest to steak hache) would cost about £2.50...... So looks like UK still has cheaper food👍

Plaidparty · 27/03/2023 23:03

Was in France a few weeks ago
a d couldn’t believe the prices. €4.50 for 1.5kg of carrots - not organic or anything. Just basic carrots.

notimagain · 27/03/2023 23:15

Food (even basic stuff) has always tended to be more expensive in French supermarkets than in the UK but inflation has taken hold here.

Agree with a few above comments that in the case of the OP there's no genuine UK equivalent to steak hache (sorry, no accents on this device), a really good quality burger is as close as you'll get.

BaronessBomburst · 27/03/2023 23:33

Two good quality burgers 250g 4.69
Salted butter 250g 2.29
Supermarket own squash 2.85
Total 10.83
That's in euros in an average Dutch supermarket, shops own range. The meat and butter won't be as good as in France.

If you buy branded it'll come in at around 15 euros but won't be any better.

burgledinParis · 28/03/2023 07:27

Thanks all!

i have a question - if sirop is not squash - what is it English ?

As for butter - it will be beurre moulé salé or it will not be ;-)

On a more serious note I did look at non branded stuff but even the cheap steak haché filled with bamboo fiber and god knows what were 5 euros for 2. I’ve just started eating meat after a few years without and so for the little I eat ( and little it will be given the price) I don’t want to be eating crap.
A whole chicken in at least 14 euros for a shit one and about 20 for a non organic but free range one. And don’t get me started on loo roll.
Most of the butter here seems to be French so I don’t think it’s affected by Norway butter issues - but all of the butter is eye watering expensive.
@Mossstitch I love this squash/sirop but you have to use very very little. I probably put about two tablespoons worth in a litre of water. It is very very sweet and so undribkable if you add to much - but I prefer it from the tessiere passion fruit one.

I was in San Diego in November for work and was so relieved to be putting all my meals on expenses because it was ludicrous.

I spent a couple of hours looking at supermarket prices yesterday online - it’s just crazy. Even basics are ludicrous.

I normally shop online and for the week and have noticed prices rising but was always putting it down to the fact I had a nice bottle of wine or whatever in my basket.

I Hope the inflation stops or slows down soon but I don’t see that happening.

I lived in Paris last year. Supermarkets are very expensive. Markets even more so. Little brown paper bag of tomatoes €7.

BrieAndChilli · 28/03/2023 13:03

Paris is going to be much more expensive in the same way that london is here. Smaller supermarkets charge more than the bigger ones, even in our small town the small tesco expresscharges maybe 30-50% more on some items than the bigger tesco 5 min drive away!!

We lived in the south of France we went to the sunday market for fruit and veg, and the baker for bread etc. was much cheaper than supermarket. but we are talking 20 years ago so things may well have changed!!!!

Snoken · 28/03/2023 13:50

I'm in Stockholm and put similar products into my basket and it came to €10.25 or around £9. Considering Sweden is known for being expensive, Paris is even more so!
