Do you have to still pay bedroom tax??

It's an under occupancy charge - are you under occupying a council house?

ACynicalDad · 21/03/2023 11:33

You might want a home with the right number of rooms, but I suspect if you hold out until after the next election it may disappear if Labour win.

There isn’t an actual ‘bedroom tax’, it’s a deduction that could be taken from housing benefit for additional bedrooms.

https://www.gov.uk/housing-benefit/what-youll-get

The government deduct 14% or 25% from housing benefit if the property has more bedrooms than would be required on a housing ‘entitlement’

Housing Benefit

Housing Benefit or Local Housing Allowance (LHA) - rates, eligibility, claim form, calculator, appeals, 'Discretionary Housing Payment'.

… Hit send too soon

If you would be entitled to full housing benefit and had the right number of bedrooms then the benefit would pay all of the rent. If entitled to full housing benefit but have too many rooms then a percentage is deducted and you would be expected to pay the balance of the rent

If entitled to partial housing benefit then if you have ‘too many’ bedrooms then your share of the rent is higher

myheartmyhead · 21/03/2023 12:03

We have a 3 bedroom house, 2 boys, so they can share. They take 12% off us.

ISpyCobraKai · 21/03/2023 12:06

Not if you're in Scotland.

lele11 · 22/03/2023 09:09

I'm not on benefits or in council house guys

Well then you can have as many bedrooms as you want

Then you can have as many bedrooms as you can afford to rent / buy.

lele11 · 22/03/2023 09:44

Won't have to pay any tax on it?

Nobody pays tax on bedrooms.

You just don't get housing benefit for more bedrooms than you need

SpinningFloppa · 22/03/2023 09:49

Does anyone know if you still have to pay it if on pip (this isn’t my situation someone I know)

lele11 · 22/03/2023 09:55

Ok thanks prem!

I wasn't sure

Larger houses incur higher council tax though.

Right, that's not at all what the thread is about.

tommika · 22/03/2023 11:29

If you aren’t on benefits etc then the ‘bedroom tax’ doesn’t apply
It never was a tax, just a potential reduction if on benefit

Honeysuckle16 · 22/03/2023 11:45

ISpyCobraKai, agree with you. One of the best Scottish Government policies is to mitigate this appalling decrease in benefits which adversely affects so many people.

Being in receipt of PIP doesn’t automatically mean someone is exempt from bedroom tax.

There are some situations where an extra bedroom is allowed. One example is where it is deemed inappropriate for one member of a couple to share with the other because of their disability and they receive certain benefits e.g. daily living component of PIP. Another example is where someone receives regular overnight care from someone who isn’t resident in the house and receives one of the qualifying benefits.

Confused

You can have a mansion for one person if you can afford it. The tax, actually an under occupancy charge l, only applies if you are on benefits aka the state is paying your rent or you live in council housing

@ACynicalDad Not sure why you think that, the spare room subsidy started when it was found that it was not fair that people who rent privately were subject to the Local Housing Allowance so are restricted in the number of rooms they can have but people in social housing had no such restrictions and it was Labour under Brown who started the LHA scheme

MelchiorsMistress · 26/03/2023 03:19

And this is why Labour branding a change in housing benefit rules as ‘Bedroom Tax’ was so ridiculous and over dramatic. People were genuinely believed that it was an actual tax when it was nothing like one.
