What planet is Jamie Oliver on? £1

I just want to say I absolutely love Jamie, Oliver, and his cooking . watching
£1 wonders right now
he is using up some very expensive ingredients, 3/4 of a bar of butter isn’t budget friendly at all, if I had butter, I certainly wouldn’t be using almost all of it in one recipe it’s so expensive nowadays
he is also using olive oil, another very expensive ingredient
I feel like I’m moaning, but I went to Sainsbury’s today and spent almost £20 and bloody packed lunch alone for the kids. I absolutely hate margarine so bit the bullet and bought butter which was £2.60!

He's trying to cut costs in the cooking too. Slow roasting is often a lovely way to eat cheaper cuts of meat but it's not great if you're trying to reduce energy costs.

I'm enjoying watching it. And you can't complain that butter is pricey when he's literally costed it in the dish Confused

Some ingredients he uses aren't easy to get a hold of. Shallots? No thanks I will just buy onions as they are more readily available 🤷

I hear you OP

Aldi - cheapest supermarket of the year

Theredjellybean · 20/03/2023 23:22

I can't stand him...so smug and I am sure if there wasn't a TV series and a book deal in it he wouldn't be "trying to help"

PinkButtercups · 20/03/2023 23:43

They're out of touch with reality that's why.

SunshineGeorgie · 21/03/2023 00:46

Where's this £2 and £2.60 'butter'??

Here you go for the £2 one..
The really nice salt crystal butter is cheaper than Aldi too.

Oh, and poundland had £2 lurpak the other day.

Phoebo · 21/03/2023 01:02

Agree. But it's Jamie Oliver, not some basic home cook

SunshineGeorgie · 21/03/2023 01:22

@NewBootsAndRanty

Is that full sized? I shall go and look! Thankyou!

NewBootsAndRanty · 21/03/2023 01:23

Head over to YouTube and watch 'Atomic Shrimp'.

He sets himself food challenges (amongst other things) he did a '3 meals for £1' a while ago and recently he tried it again with a larger budget, I think it was £1.65.

He sets rules about whether he can use the food in his cupboard or the sugar sachets from McDonalds.

@Sunshinewarmsthesoul are you on the right thread?

Is liver as nutritious as it’s claimed to be? I had some with bacon mash and gravy recently and it was I assume an acquired taste but so apparently good for price/micronutrients/environmentalism ie trying to eat every bit of the animal possible.

But still bleurgh. Lambs liver. I soaked it in milk first. What am I doing wrong?

Try chicken livers instead.....fry with garlic, bacon and mushrooms, but if sherry ir Marsala and reduce and add a little cream. Delicious with pasta

panacheofveg · 21/03/2023 03:13

I had to 🙄 at one of his budget programmes where a mum told him she didn't have fresh herbs as staple ingredients and he suggested foraging for wild sorrel in the pavement cracks. She lived in a high rise on a very urban council estate. He said it as if she was utterly mad for not having thought of this wonderful idea herself Hmm.

BertaHoon · 21/03/2023 03:17

£1 a head isn't that difficult if you think stews, Bolognese, curry...

I'm not going to faff making a pie.

Blummin eck... Tin of tomatoes, garlic, mixed herbs (bit of chilli if you fancy), cook through, boil down to make a sauce, mix through economy pasta - job done. Probably £1.50 serves 4. Go crazy, add cheese.

Forgot to add the onion. 18p.

I follow a pub chef on Facebook who does cooking videos & he beats Jamie Oliver by a mile, hr doesn't use fancy ingredients & his recipes look so tasty. I'm doing his Chinese curry this week.

MistySkiesAreGone · 21/03/2023 03:36

I wondered how a cauliflower steak would be a filling meal for a teen. Even with a naan.

Zippedydoo123 · 21/03/2023 03:46

Jamie Oliver has always used expensive ingredients. He simply isn't in the real world for most of us. He also does a lot of meat dishes which cost a packet and are bad for the environment and also our health.

stayathomer · 21/03/2023 04:13

I think if he stopped trying to make things ‘easier’ for people he’d be perfect- The ministry of food is still my favourite cook book, I’m the world’s worst cook but can manage all of it!

That man really lives on another planet doesn't he.

@Zippedydoo123 why is meat bad for your health? I find it much more filling than veggie food even if it costs a bit more. I eat veggie stew and I'm starving within the hour even if I had something like chickpeas. I get avoiding red/processed meat though.

If you use beans and lentils these are filling. I do eat meat or chicken twice weekly but red meat and processed meats are not good for our health. Strokes cancer etc.

adriftabroad · 21/03/2023 06:06

Pizza was for 2 🙄
Butter was costed in the recipe 🙄

He is giving us ideas and showing us how to do things and if you have not got a few mixed herbs and some oil then no, you will not be able to cook.

These complaints are like the ones on the BBC Good Food website.

I love his recipes and swap in what I have got if I am missing something or cannot be bothered. eg I would buy ready made frozen pastry. You improvise to suit you. Think he comes across really well. I like him.

My teen DD eats triple what I eat, a toddler would eat half... do you want him to calculate all that in too? Crazy!
