77 kwh of gas used per day?

Hi, I can't get my head around kwh at all so can someone tell me, are these usage figures high?

77kwh gas per day
21kwh electric per day

We do have a fair few electricals and I do a lot of washing and tumbledrying so I'm coming to terms with the electricity usage, but the gas seems very high when I read that the average is around 34kwh per day?

The heating is always set to 16 degrees but I never notice it click on at that temp, I turn the thermostat up until the flame appears at 6.50am (the flame appears at around 18 degrees) and then turn it off around 7.20am.

Through the day if I feel chilly I'll turn it up to click the heating on for an hour or so (some days not at all, others 2 or 3 times through the day).

Every now and then I hear the boiler whirring as though the heating is on, but I feel a radiator and they're either cold or only lukewarm, other times I might walk past a radiator and touch it and it feels slightly warm but the thermostat flame isn't on (indicating - I think - that the heating isn't on) and I haven't had the heating on in a while.

That's our current weekly usage, as in the last week Saturday to Saturday. We have low usage though.

How much does your actual meter (not the smart meter) show you use in 1 day ?

It's simple to convert that to kWh if you post it and the meter units (ft3 or m3) to check the smart meter is working properly.

77 kWh is about 7m2 of gas per day. It's a lot. But probably not so bad if you live in a poorly insulated 5 bedroom mansion. But over the top if you are in a 3 bed terrace.

NewBootsAndRanty · 20/03/2023 15:57

Totally depends on so many factors.
I'm in a 1 bed flat with heating at 18 overnight and 21 in the day - in the cold snap the other week I was using 78kwh in a day, yesterday I used 29kwh.

Is your boiler firing up to heat water?

NewBootsAndRanty · 20/03/2023 16:01

Also don't forget that if your looking at a daily average of 34kwh a day over 12 months, actual usage will be a lot more than that in winter and a lot less in the summer.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/03/2023 16:16

You are correct that the average gas consumption is around 34 kWh per day.

But that's the annual average figure, that the price cap figure is based on - around 12000 kWh per year gas, and 2900 kWh electricity.

However, most people's gas consumption will be much higher in winter than summer. Is your 77 kWh daily figure your annual average divided by 365 or is it the amount you've used over the last few weeks/months?

If it's the former, you're using about twice as much as average, which doesn't seem to match up with what you're saying about your heating, but if it's the latter, it might be about right and about average. Although 16-18 C heating isn't very warm, so you'd not expect it to use much gas, unless your house is large and/or poorly insulated, so needs more heating to warm up properly?

NewBootsAndRanty · 20/03/2023 16:29

Presumably you're doing a few loads of washing and drying every day to get that level of electricity use?

maximist · 20/03/2023 16:32

I used 147kwh of gas in one month, in a four bed house with the thermostat set to 16 during the day and 17 in the evenings, with occasional boosts if I was cold. One shower a day, run from the combi boiler.

Sorry, I misread my statement! I used 1676kwh, the lower figure is units. So about 54kwh per day.

NewBootsAndRanty · 20/03/2023 16:35

I did wonder, @maximist !

Hoosemover · 21/03/2023 17:32

there are lots of variables to consider. The size and age of your home. What insulation is like. The age and size of the boiler.
I’m averaging 55kw a day for a small 80s detach bungalow with a ten year old boiler at around 18/19 degrees. Was using around the 70kw mark during that cold snap earlier this month.

Calmdown14 · 21/03/2023 18:57

Your electric still seems high. That's more than I use and I don't have any gas (3 bed, four people).

Do you have electric showers or gas? Is there a water heater or something using large amounts?

The UK average is about 8kwh I think

CatOnTheChair · 21/03/2023 19:09

How many people in the house?

The gas usage will drop significantly when the warmer weather comes.
The electricity looks high to me.

That 34kWh of gas average a day is for a 2-3 bed house with 3-4 people in. It will be heavily weighted to winter.

FWIW typical electricity is 8kWh/day - and varies much less with the weather than the gas.

I'd hazard a guess you are in a larger than average house, with more than average people.

4 of us in a 5 bed use pretty close to the high user average -17,000 kWh of gas and 4700kWh of elec iirc

77kw per day isn't awful, it depends on what you're doing in terms of heating and water usage

I average around 60kw per day during winter months. House is always set to 17c or above and we have three 30 minute heating on times spaced out throughout the day up to 22c.

I work full time as does my wife, So we use what we need to stay comfortable and happy, pay what you can afford to pay and be conscious of over using for the sake of it, especially if you are struggling with the cost.

2 people, 3bed semi detached. Both shower twice a day with boiler heater shower rather than electric shower.

InveterateWineDrinker · 17/12/2025 11:12

This is a bit of a zombie thread that the OP never came back to, but for what it's worth I was a bit shocked at first when I saw that we were averaging 60kWh a day for gas during the winter in a well-insulated modern house (4 bed detached, occupied all day, try to keep the internal temperature between 20 C and 22 C.)

But the thing is our system boiler is 24kW, so it was only actually running for two and a half hours a day during winter, while providing both heating and hot water. Thinking of it like that it was almost reasonable.

21kWh a day on electricity does sound high to me though. We average 7kWh daily in the winter, up to about 12kWh a day in the summer.
