Council tax question

asblackasyoursoul · 13/03/2023 11:26

Just received the dreaded council tax/water bill for the year up to march 2024.
Was thinking about whether to pay it all at once or monthly. How would it work if I was to move out of this property in say October?

Does that mean I shouldn’t pay the council tax for the whole year all at once as hypothetically I won’t be living here in October. Or if I did would it get refunded?

Hope this makes sense, thanks!

They'll just pro rata it. If you move within the sane council you'll get a credit on your new house, otherwise a refund.

We got a refund when we moved in November. It was automatically applied (we moved in area) but apparently in some LAs you have to request it. It was very straightforward (although I did have to ring them as the first bill didn’t apply it as they didn’t know who was moving in, but it was a five minute call).

Monthly is actually 10 instalments , so you would have overpaid and be due a refund if you moved mid year. You then pay prorata on new address.

You can ask to pay over 12 months.
I would pay half a year which will take you to the end of September and then advise your leaving date and wait for the final bill.

If you can pay it out do it they will refund you

Whatever's easiest for you. The cost is the same as they'll refund/adjust if you move.

If you pay all your other bills monthly out of income just do the same for council tax and water.

If you want to keep your monthly outgoings low but have a pot of money for such things, pay them both in full now, and forget about it until you move when it will get sorted out by them.

They don’t offer 10 instalments in our area.
