Bills going up by £300+ on April 1st

Rent, broadband, water, gas, electric and home insurance all going up.

I know lots of other people will be in this position too. It’s utterly lousy. Every time I go to the supermarket I notice prices have rocketed up across most items. Our shopping list costs way more than it did last year.

All in all we’re set to pay over £300 more than we did this time last year. I feel fed up. I’ve had a pay rise recently which equates to about £80 extra a month, but it still leaves us £220 down.

We are trying to save up a deposit to buy and it feels like the goalposts are being shifted continually. I really feel for everyone facing cost rises. How can this go on?!

We will get about 300 pay rise between us so on these calculations should break even….but shouldn’t be using heating or tumble dryer anywhere near as as much from April ( not hung washing outside since last September)

I wonder how single income households, that do not qualify for any support are going to cope with the coming rises in April. Not sure how people are supposed to just find 100s of pounds extra each month.

Scary times.

Standing charges for energy are rising, so it looks like those with lower than average usage will pay slightly more than before.

Overthebow · 17/03/2023 06:32

Have you checked comparisons for all of those? Our house/contents insurance and broadband are both going down. Our gas and electric is going down too as we won’t be having the heating on now it’s getting warmer.

GasPanic · 17/03/2023 10:05

Heating will go off on 1st April so bills will go down for me.

Mine won't as I have a fixed dd, I think most people do?

I have fixed dd.

Fortunately the fixed dd has no control over the heating - that is me and the Hive only.

Well my energy bill will go down but the amount I pay each month will stay the same so I will be no better off.

KnittedCardi · 17/03/2023 13:20

I always reduce my DD in the summer. Still had a buffer for this Winter. Most companies allow you to Flexi change the DD.

Recently received massively increased bills for car and home insurance. Have changed companies and am paying same as last year again.

Okunevo · 17/03/2023 15:06

I can't afford to pay less in summer as I'm on a low income and it would mean a higher dd in winter. My dd is actually increasing by £67 a month as the £400 is finished now.

Redruby2020 · 17/03/2023 16:22

I thought an increase had been frozen until whenever it is 🤔
Water i have already been notified about, so I'm just holding on tight re: electric and gas 😵‍💫

Okunevo · 17/03/2023 16:53

@Redruby2020 it's frozen but we've lost the £67 a month so that's an extra £67 to find compared with winter

Oh okay I didn't realise we were losing the energy payments. The thing is it's not £67 a month to have to find, not unless your bill is that much.

... overall it's an extra £400/year people will need to pay compared to the last 12 months though.

Yes, most people's dd will be higher than £67 and it's not a good idea to just pay summer bills if you are struggling financially already.
