Single parent benefits - some Qs

Do all single parents get benefits?

How much could you earn before universal credit is stopped?

Do both parents get the same benefits?

Why don't you look up benefits on the gov.uk website? All the information you want is on it.

Gingerkittykat · 08/03/2023 22:51

No, not all single parents get benefits.

There is no set figure when UC stops. Someone with 1 child, low rent and no childcare would be entitled to less than someone with more children, a disabled DC, high housing or high childcare costs.

Only one child gets benefits for the child even if they have 50-50 care.

*one parent gets benefits for the child, not child.

That seems unfair

What exactly seems unfair?

VanCleefArpels · 09/03/2023 12:47

Single parenthood in and of itself does not give rise to entitlement to benefits. It’s about a person’s income and ability to work mostly. Plus the age of the children and their needs (if any).

Several online benefits calculators exist

MargotMoon · 09/03/2023 13:25

Only one parent can claim Child Benefit or be considered the resident parent for a UC claim (or DLA claim if the child has disabilities). Even if you both had shared responsibility eg a 50/50 split.

The idea that all single parents get benefits is just crap peddled by right wing media who want everyone to believe that we are the scourge of a decent society

hearbeet · 09/03/2023 13:31

All single parents don't get benefits.

I don't. Because im a high earner.

Why would you think that all single parents get benefits?

freshprincessofbatshit · 09/03/2023 16:04

No not all get benefits.

If you earn less than what is considered a minimum income for standard of life for your child - most likely you'll be eligible for some

Best thing is to use a benefit's calculator and see what it says for a guide to see if it's worth applying for anything

Being single in itself doesn't mean you get anything more- you might earn more than a 2 parent household income does

freshprincessofbatshit · 09/03/2023 16:09

Why? It's not about the parent getting free money - it's ensuring that parents can provide a reasonable standard of living for the children

Disabled people have significantly higher costs over a month than those who aren't disabled

They aren't going to offer you more money because you found a lower rent either

It's all based off of trying not to have innocent children living in poverty

I've too much in savings for universal credit. So all I get is the single persons discount on my council tax bill, which isn't even anything to do with being a parent. I also had the option of getting paid child benefit ( I earn under 50k) weekly instead of monthly.

WiIson · 09/03/2023 16:16

I don't get any benefits.

peeweechigs · 09/03/2023 17:22

Has it occurred to you to google this very simple question?!

Yoyo2021 · 12/03/2023 23:43

You need to use a benefit calculator. Please google ‘Entitled to’ where you can do a calculation. I am a single parent and have a mortgage I don’t get any universal credit. I earn £1775 a month. I do get child benefit 80 something pound.

Why do you ask @LuckyThatMyBreastsAreSmallAndHumble?
