Tesco shop compared to a year ago

Thought this article might be interesting to a lot of you www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/shopping/my-tesco-big-shop-90-26354673 kind of proves we’re not misremembering the cost of things in the olden days ;) I’m not sure I like the tone of Tesco saying ‘well we’ve price matched to Aldi’ as if they still aren’t making huge profits. My Ocado order was £4 cheaper when price matched to Tesco last week.

I’ve swapped brands (tried Tesco and M&S for Lurpak substitute) and replaced my usual products with others on a price per portion/gram basis and a good thing is I’ve introduced more meals without meat into our diets.

The comparison is interesting, but I think it's what most of us would have expected.

I think many people doing a shop like that today will have made adjustments, ie fruit on offer rather than melon and strawberries. Ditched brands like Onken, Muller, Pukka and Mr Kipling. Also, more pulses instead of meats and making things yourself, ie garlic bread, own sauces. Adjustments have had to be made. It'll benefit some producers/manufacturers but I think many will suffer with the change to other options. Unfortunately, having to be done in order to pay the bills or make your money go further.

Yes i agree making brand adjustments. However lately all tesco own products seem to be low in stock or none at all (as everyone has same idea probably) my shopping is more now than it used to be buying nappies and formula!
Crazy prices on some stuff

I’ve shopped at Tesco for years. Always spent £60/£65 a week for 2 adults, 1 child. That was buying branded stuff. Cathedral city, fairy liquid, walkers crisps etc etc.

We are spending £80/£90 a week now without any of the branded stuff, Tesco own brand cheese, washing up liquid, fabric conditioner etc.

I did recently do a 2 month stint at lidl to save on costs but was spending similar £, my ds has autism and a nightmare to feed and was rejecting a lot of the lidl substitutes so went back to Tesco.

Pisses me off every Monday when I go shopping.

And don’t start me on having to downgrade from lurpak to butterpak either 🤣

As mentioned above, Tescos are very low on some of their products. I've got four items I'm constantly looking for. Not sure if it's down to more people buying and running out, or not being able to source ingredients at a low enough price to keep the eventual selling price down.
