A cheap, easy sauce for pasta:

Add a drizzle of olive oil to a pan
Heat oil and add a tin of tomatoes
Add a pinch of sugar, salt and herbs of your choice and a few grinds of black pepper
Heat and squish up the tomatoes in the pan.

Serve with pasta and grated cheese - what else? 😀

* the addition of oil, sugar, salt, pepper and dried herbs is a great way to jazz up a cheap tin of tomatoes.

@JennyDarlingRIP

In my experience, hot meals at school are not filling enough to be a child's main meal for the day.

Must depend on the school. My primary aged DC struggle to eat their evening meal because they are still full from school lunches🤷

Beachhutnut · 01/05/2023 22:05

Get tinned tomatoes and curry powder in future to save buying pre made curry, so much cheaper also frozen veg pre packed veg is likewise pricey. Also usually cheaper to buy a joint of meat for main meal x 2 plus sandwiches than pre packed sandwich meat. I grate veg and add lentils I to mince to bulk it up then freeze the extra so it goes further.

IncessantNameChanger · 01/05/2023 22:17

I'm bulking out my curries with tinned peaches now which is going down well with the kids. I think all the kids eat well at school but it's a long day so I like to give them a hot meal at night too so I can see they have eaten

I have chickpea flour for roti. Not sure where I went wrong last time. Maybe should have used the rolling pin..... any tips?

My Eldest teen has poo pood an idea of burgers in Bagels as a meal choice. Shame, I don't have any rolls. I really don't want to visit the shops

Sorry if this has already been answered but chickpea flour i.e. gram flour works best made into a batter rather than for ‘roti’. I’ve never really made dough out of it. For roti use chappati flour - can be found in most Asian supermarkets as well as the world food aisles of mainstream aupermarkets. If not, plain flour or maybe even self raising flour will work better than gram.

Well then they eat the burger without the bagel

If they are very young they don't get to chose
If they are not very young it's a good time to teach home economics

Then the teenager can eat the burger without the bun, I do it all the time (homemade burger). I'm a Coeliac, welcome to my world kid! 😄

In fact, guess what's cooking in the kitchen right now, with oven chips and a salad...

Ooh sorry, quoted wrong post, but was just coming back to say what a wise post @midgemadgemodge has made.

SeatonCarew · 04/05/2023 17:31

I'll shut up and go and enjoy my breadless burger now! 🤣

IncessantNameChanger · 04/05/2023 18:13

I never did have the burgers in a bagal! But I did learn a lot from that week. I think it would have been a good combination now.
