What is everybody's gas cost per day?

recently moved and my gas is alot more not sure why as literally had heating on no more than 18 im still cold!

its costing about £7 a day on gas alone this can be with me having heating on for 2 hours only and one shower

a smart meter was already installed and im wondering if something is wrong and i can request them to fit a new one

ive asked friends/family they are having heating on for hours at 20 degrees and only costing £2-3 on gas!!

My heating has barely been on TBH, maybe a couple of hours, plus a shower
My gas and electric daily is £5 together

catskittens · 27/02/2023 09:19

not really much help but took meter readings and over the last 20 days g&e comes in at £8/10 a day
3 bed house
heating on approx 5-7 hrs a day about 18c

xogossipgirlxo · 27/02/2023 09:50

Semi-detached from 90s, two people at home. Yesterday it was around £6, heating is set for 18 at night, 20 during the day. We used oven for about an hour, no laundry etc.

xogossipgirlxo · 27/02/2023 09:50

2 bed house, I should add

Sundayscented · 27/02/2023 09:54

Check the tariff on the smart meter is correct - ours wasn't and was showing £20+ daily fuel use!

If you are really having it on for only 2 hours per day and that is your only usage then it is just about possible you have a units mix up on the meter/billing. We have seen it a few times on here.

Basically that would increase your cost by x3 over what it should be. It really depends on how big your house is, whether you really have it on for only two hours and whether you are using gas for other stuff like cooking.

I would say if you are in a 2-3 bed and using the gas for nothing other than 2 hours heating a day then you are probably close to the limit where you might be paying 3x as much as you should. But it's close...

To check, check the units on your actual meter (on the front, either m3 or ft3x100) and the billing units on your bill (either m3 and ft3x100) and that they both match.

Rosemariex · 27/02/2023 16:25

Hi thanks.. i will check them dont have a bill yet as not been in the house long enough waiting on my first bill.

is there any other way to check if it could be faulty ive rang EDF they was rude and couldnt care less!

If you think you've a faulty meter you'll normally get asked to take readings at the same time each day for 7 days.
Start to do that now if you think it's broken.

Have a look at your daily usage online and see if you can pinpoint when you're using the energy. If you can't see a breakdown on your suppliers site or app, use Loop loop.homes/ - you can see half hourly breakdowns and it updates every few hours.

Scalessayeek · 27/02/2023 16:32

If we’re in and it’s mega cold it’s been topping £15 gas and £5 electric. :/

NewBootsAndRanty · 27/02/2023 16:36

Keeping my 1 bed flat at 21° in the day and 18° overnight has used anything from 33 to 60 kwh of gas a day over the last ten days or so, depending on how cold it's been outside.
Running a bath uses approx 5kwh, I would imagine a shower would use far less.

Rosemariex · 27/02/2023 17:32

How do i know if meter numbers are going to fast as online says to check that.. just switched heating on

And the 3 numbers in front of the M3 seem to be changing fast when i click the update button what would be a normal amount its gone from

377m3
To 391m3 then 477m3 within literally 2 minutes

thanks

Is there a decimal point or anything you're missing there?

Rosemariex · 27/02/2023 17:38

Yeah so full reading

3783.377m3
3783..391m3
3783.477m3

also heating been on 10 mins my smart display has gone up over 20p

OP posts:
NewBootsAndRanty · 27/02/2023 17:51

The first hour my heating kicks in to go from 18 to 21° (so a 3° temperature increase) normally uses about 5-7kwh an hour, and takes a couple of hours to reach 21.
If I had to make a up for a larger temp difference (eg going from 14 to 18 or 18 to 22) I'd obviously use more and over a longer time.

You've used just over a kwh in between the first and third readings you posted.

Rosemariex · 27/02/2023 18:32

Has anybody requested an independent test of their gas meter and know how much it costs? Thanks

OP posts:
NewBootsAndRanty · 27/02/2023 18:38

This suggests Eon charged £160 this time last year.

NewBootsAndRanty · 27/02/2023 18:48

Also don't rely on your in home display balance as they're not always on the right cost settings. Look at your actual usage in kwh and work it out from there.

1m3 of gas is equal to about 11kwh. The price cap tariff is about £0.104 IIRC, so if you use 1m3 of gas (say from 3783.000 to 3784.000) then your smart meter should increase by 11x£0.104 = £1.14.

I would compare the cost on the smart meter compared with the actual units used on the main meter.

If your smart meter shows higher cost than this then either a) you are on a more expensive tariff (check your tariff) or b) there is something up with the meter.

Okunevo · 27/02/2023 18:53

December average £2.05 including standing charge
January average £2.02 including standing charge

bubbles101 · 28/02/2023 17:55

I have my heating on two hours a day and my gas is approx. £8 add in shower for 3 of us and it jumps to £10 plus a day is this right I'm paid £670 in Jan for gas & electricity and another £640 in Feb. What are you paying monthly?

Shadesofscarlett · 28/02/2023 17:57

ignore your in home display and use readings from the meters. And if you put your heating on it can cost a few pounds a day. You need to give them readings and ask for a bill.

Madcats · 28/02/2023 18:05

If you have smart meters, why not see whether your energy provider has an app or sign up with something like Hugo.

For the past two months we seemed to be spending £6-£10/day (most days about £7).

This is for 3 of us in the house with 9 double radiators and underfloor in kitchen and bathroom on for about 3-4 hours/day.

We're in a draughty old house.

Irishka2022 · 03/04/2023 14:04

Mine is on 22/23C for 12 hours daily (from 6pm when im back from work till 6am when i leave the house.) That comes to £10 daily. I kept a log book for 2 month and wrote meter reading daily, tried different options when to have it on/off so i can understand exactly my usage and cost.
