PIP - new boiler grant?

Greenfairydust · 20/02/2023 18:23

Was not sure where to post this.

My sister is disabled, in her mid 50s and in receipt of PIP, but no other benefits as she works part-time.

Her ancient boiler needs replacing. Someone suggested she might qualify for financial help to replace it.

I wonder if anyone in receipt of PIP has managed to get a grant to help with the cost of this? was it an easy process?

Also if anyone has suggestions as to the most economical/practical type of boiler and supplier that she might want to go for that would be helpful too! She lives on her own in a small terraced house.

new boiler grants

This info may be helpful.

No as PIP is non-means tested. Does she also receive universal credit? If so then she may be eligible but not on PIP alone

Greenfairydust · 20/02/2023 19:08

I am confused because some websites claim that PIP is a qualifying benefit for this.

It used to be a qualifying benefit. Not anymore.

Where are you? I'm in Scotland & Home Energy Scotland offer a grant for a boiler based on pop. I've applied, have been accepted and am awaiting confirmation of works starting so definitely genuine

backawayfatty1 · 20/02/2023 22:53

Pip not pop lol

Greenfairydust · 20/02/2023 23:05

@backawayfatty1 Sister lives in the South East.

As far as I know - and it may have changed again- there are now no boiler grants that purely use PIP as a criteria. (PIP is not means tested so they usually require things like tax credits or income support / universal credit as well as proof of low income). We were in a similar boat and couldn’t find any grants to help us - despite being on tax credits as well, there just isn’t the same amount of grant schemes around now. We ended up looking into a pay monthly scheme like Boxt offer instead.

@Xrays Thank you for clarifying.

Just in case we have emailed her local council to explain her situation and see if there is anything available for upgrade to a new boiler as they still seem to have grant schemes if you choose one of these ''heat pumps'' things.

Must be Scotland only, that's unfortunate.

Not sure if this would suit

Greenfairydust this is the sort of home related grant which home improvement agencies generally help administer. You can find the local one here www.findmyhia.org.uk/

SmileyClare · 22/02/2023 19:47

Look up ECHO it’s a fund to help fuel poor or vulnerable households pay to repair or replace broken boilers.

SmileyClare · 22/02/2023 19:54

That’s ECHO - Emergency Central Heating Offer

Energy companies are also offering grants to help households replace white goods; cookers, fridges, washing machines.

The Citizens Advice Bureau are very helpful in accessing support schemes. Your sister can contact them online if she has difficulty going in person.

I hope you can get some help; it’s so tough for those struggling on benefits x

If your sister only works part-time are you sure she's claiming all the benefits she's entitled to ?
