Redundancy

Hi
Husband is may possibly being made redundant. At the moment at consultation stage and will find out decision in a month time. Has anyone got any ideas of preparing for this? We plan to cut back as much we can and could go down to 1 car. Is anyone in a similar situation? From looking online I think he might be eligible for contribution based job seekers allowance.

Thanks

If he has worked and paid NI contributions in the past 2-3 years he will be eligible to claim new style ( contributions based) JSA. It is only £77 a week though and only lasts for 6 months. If you don't have savings in excess of 16k you may be able to claim Universal credit but it will depend on your situation - your earnings, number and ages of children, whether you pay rent etc.

Look at every single outgoing you have and cut, slash and burn the costs. Move savings around to ensure you can access them when and as you may need them as some may require longer notice periods than you think to avoid losses.
If you work, can you increase hours or take on another job, if you don’t work look for it.
Your husband needs to apply for jobs in his sector now, and begin to accept that he may need to accept a job, any job to help cover your essential bills. (Sorry I’ve made assumptions, regarding how he sees his work role but just incase I’m right..) Benefits are minuscule.

What's his notice period and what is his likely redundancy pay out - you can check on the government website and do a calculation.

My notice period is 3 months so I know that in a redundancy situation I'd get paid that as a minimum plus redundancy which is probably now a couple of months money on top which would give nearly 6 months to find work?

Presumably he doesn't have unemployment insurance?

Will he get redundancy pay?

Update CV, look at job ads and start thinking about crafting good covering letters/applications. Lots of tips online.

Find out the company policy and support available - especially if it’s a big company they might link up with support services to help staff update their CVs and find new jobs, and he might get guaranteed interviews when applying for internal roles while he’s in an ‘at risk’ period - depends on the company.

If he needs mental well-being / mindset type support have a google for resources - plenty out there. Use a search term like ‘redundancy help mindset’

I’ve recently applied for voluntary redundancy as my organisation is merging with two others. I should find out in about 4 weeks if it’s been approved. I’m currently looking for jobs (although I can’t apply yet) and getting a feel for what’s out there. I’m updating my CV and doing some online courses. We’ve cutdown on some non essential bills but the plan is to transfer my monthly pay (from the redundancy pay) into our account until I get another job. Then we’ll pay off debts. I’m actually not that worried as I can already see that there’s loads of jobs available in my field.

This free redundancy guide will be really useful for him

Agree with others about cutting whatever bills you can, potentially look at a mortgage holiday too?

confusedlots · 17/02/2023 13:54

I got made redundant a few years ago and was able to claim job seekers allowance, not sure if that's what it's still called. It's not a lot of money but may as well claim it if you can.

Has he worked there for long? The longer he has been there, the bigger redundancy payout he will get. I got around £9k when I was made redundant, and am now doing a job I much prefer so it all worked out quite well for me thankfully.

ChristmasComing123 · 17/02/2023 17:21

Thank you everyone for replies. Yes has been there for 9 years so will get redundancy pay. Should be eligible for job seekers contribution based.Worried about him getting another job after. No employment insurance this has come out of blue but makes sense when you think about cost of living energy increases. Mortgage holiday a good idea will look in to this.

Sign up with agencies who may have work opportunities in his field of expertise.

Look at free government training that may enhance his CV www.gov.uk/guidance/free-courses-for-jobs

Hi,

im being made redundant from my job.

I told my employer I was pregnant and 2 weeks later my job is at risk.

I’ve been with the business for 6 and a half years. I’m the only person that does my role. As a HR manager. and my role is a major role in the business.

I’m a bit all over the place.

they said it’s not to do with me being pregnant. Which seems no likely as my job was fine in January!

any advice would be appreciated .

Americansmoothy · 02/03/2023 10:46

@Dotty22222222 you and would get a better response if you started your own thread.

Contact ACAS and pregnant then screwed pregnantthenscrewed.com

You can be made redundant when pregnant but it must be a true redundancy e.g. a whole team is being made redundant. Selecting one person, who happens to be pregnant, for redundancy is very likely to be unfair.

As an HR professional you will have the advantage of knowing the proper processes and that your employer must follow them. Talk to pregnant then screwed and they will advise how to address this.
