How to sell stuff?

I’m hoping this will get some response and I’m hoping I don’t appear too dim by asking…

What’s the best way to sell stuff? By stuff I mean a huge range - from a gold Longines watch, to a barely used saxophone, to other bits of gold/jewellery, to clothes, bags (mid-range - Mulberry, Coach, etc). Clothes, kids’ clothes. I am just trying to raise some funds due to the crippling cost of living.

I just don’t know where to start! I have a Vinted account, but haven’t sold via it yet. Any suggestions about where’s best for the higher end stuff would be much appreciated.

Clothes: hard to sell at all, I'd try Facebook marketplace for anything not fairly smart/special. Else give it away, you need the space.

eBay for the rest that has value < £150. Use eBay 'sold' advanced search to figure out likely price & list it buy it now + postage: think about insurance for posting items with value > £15.

Back to facebook marketplace for items > £150 except ... a car. eBay limits the % they take for cars. There are a lot of tips about each type of sale, like don't take Paypal for items that are collected.

For clothes - bundles on eBay or Vinted
Jewellery - no idea
Everything else - Facebook marketplace/ local groups

H&m takes in a bag of used clothes in exchange for £5 voucher which you can use when you spend £25 or more in there (at least they used to do it!)

I have recently donated a few bags of books to charity - couldn't sell them on Facebook
Would be happy to give some stuff away for free but there are so many time wasters on fb that I now rather donate to charity

Try gumtree and nextdoor app. Recently I have sold so many things there.

Thanks so much for your ideas. Now to start selling!

There are lots of Facebook groups for reselling clothes & other items

Jewellery- price on eBay but maybe try a pawn shop as you could always buy back later if needed depending on the weight and metal it may be worth it.
clothes- vinted as sellers don’t pay the fees and items are sold relatively quickly. Everyone is buying second hand as the price in store is too expensive with the cost of living. Have a printer handy and buy plenty of bags from Amazon to ship quickly.
I sold loads on vinted last year and had a nice some of money in the cash pot and it was always within the week. Postage times tend to be quicker at the moment. I also buy my children’s designer clothes on there to save money, I’ve saved a small fortune so this may help when you need to rebuy as many items I’ve bought brand new too.
electrical items and things I would try Facebook and gumtree.
be committed to these selling places and things will sell quicker. Find time this weekend or on a night to take photos and upload and then you will find things will sell quicker. Get plenty of photos and in good lighting as people like to see good photos so they know what they are buying.

Hi I am selling the last of my beautiful christening/naming ceremony/wedding/special occasion babies and toddler outfits for a very reasonable price as I need the space. Am I allowed to sell them on mumsnet please?

HappyHappyy · 10/04/2023 17:12

I've just earned £50 this afternoon on vinted selling a few coats buried under the stairs. Price to sell Smile

Vestiaire Collective for good branded bags, watches etc.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/04/2023 17:16

For the gold and jewellry, look at Hatton Garden Metals. Recommended by Moneysaving Expert, honest, easy to use and give very fair prices. A relative of mine has used them a couple of times successfully.

For anything 'specialist' and likely to be worth a reasonable amount, you want enthusiasts groups. There's likely to be online 'buy and sell second hand musical instruments' groups on FB etc, which might be good for the saxophone.

If the Mulberry and Coach bags are genuine, they could be worth a fair amount, so they must be groups for these as well. The challenge is showing that you're an honest seller of a genuine item, rather than selling fakes or a scammer, taking money without sending the goods. Perhaps ask on Style and Beauty as there will be people knowledgable about these items.

Oh, just seen that its a Zombie.

Still useful @BarbaraofSeville I'm thinking of having a clear out and have been making notes! Thank you.

Rinders · 10/04/2023 23:20

I’m here and have just noticed the new comments. Thanks so much - especially the Hatton Garden Metals tip. I still haven’t done anything, but hopefully moving house soon so will be a great excuse to have a proper clear out.
