We've spent £45...37% (in just 7 days) of our monthly direct debit set up... we've had to keep it 21/22c as toddler and I have chest infections...we're lucky we're on an OK tariff but it's scared me...people must be getting seriously sick or on the verge of death in temperatures and crazy fuel prices these days?!?!

Pissed off about companies giving discounts to reduce energy during a cold snap! People who need it the most need the sodding heat for their health 🤬🤬🤬 Is there some undercover agenda to "economically cleanse" the population so only the rich and healthy are left????!!!

No idea, we don’t have a smart meter, it is what it is.

We don’t cane it, so like I said it is what it is,

Mindymomo · 23/01/2023 09:00

We spent £45 on electricity and £60 on gas week before last. Total bill for the month was £430 am still in credit from last summer but that will be gone next month. Wouldn’t mind but the house is only warm not hot.

The discounts are on electricity, which only a minority use for heating and they're tiny. I've taken part in all of Octopus's 'saving sessions' and have earned a discount of about £4, so not even covering a day's usage at this time of year.

It's to smooth out energy usage peaks at times when we're at the limit of capacity as a country, that's why they're needed, that's why they're needed, not some undercover agenda.

It is what it is and all we can do is make sure we've done everything we can to keep warm while reducing the cost where possible, plus making sure we're receiving all the grants/discounts we're eligible for.

Around tenner a day in total from what I saw. You get up and it's already 5 quid on smart meter. I can't sleep when it's colder than 18 degrees at home. Too cold for me.

GasPanic · 23/01/2023 10:56

Most people are going to spend more this week because its cold.

I have spent a lot over the past few days, but prior to that when it was mild I was only heating 1 hour a day. Still using far less gas than last year.

It might be worth you getting a high tog feather duvet (so much warmer) and an electric blanket, would be a lot cheaper and warmer at night.

mondaytosunday · 23/01/2023 11:35

Three bed plus office terrace and we average about £6/day, partly as I do run a gas fire a few nights a week which costs about £3 for 4-5 hour use (so up to £10 those days, but £4 or less when not). Plus I have the heat on all day, set at 18. I use a dryer. I did up my direct debit in line with their recommendation but I'm now over £300 in credit.
Not sure why you think you need it set higher when you are ill.

ifonly4 · 23/01/2023 15:00

Have to admit we've never had our heating on 21/22c, not even if any of us have been ill (and I've had pneumonia twice) - guess we're just used to a lower temperature. When DD grew up, if heating wasn't on timed it was set to 17c in the day, around 18.5c in the evening for - DD was one of the healthiest children I knew at the time and very quickly brushed off colds - only time she had ABs was when she had her appendix out.

NewBootsAndRanty · 23/01/2023 15:06

Last week I spent £48 on gas and £3.60 electric, plus standing charges, standard price cap. Heating at 18/21 throughout (chronic lung condition).

I think I'm the lost cause, because I already sleep under two duvets 😬Don't know why, but I've always been cold at night! I'm fine during the day, but my winter set is two duvets and hot water bottle. Pathetic I know. When my husband isn't home at night, I can't sleep, because big heater is gone 😂

I think people often feel colder when ill. But more importantly, the link between illness and cold temperatures is that our immune system weakens when we are cold.

Lilbunnyfufu · 23/01/2023 17:27

The last 7 days we used
£35.60 gas
£36.54 electricity

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 23/01/2023 17:27

Doh! Only just realised this is electricity only. That explains why I’ve only saved 34p on the last couple of Loop sessions.

NewBootsAndRanty · 23/01/2023 17:37

Just found I'm due a £25 cold weather payment for the average temp being below freezing over all the last week - that covers just over half my gas use for that period and is really helpful.

catskittens · 23/01/2023 21:01

talkingfarm · 23/01/2023 22:43

Just started monitoring it properly as not on a smart meter.

So spent a while examining my gas and electric bill to understand unit price, and now have lovely spreadsheet which I update each day with meter readings. Feels good to keep on top of it alll, and not too bad at the moment.

3-bed semi 4 people, washer dryer on constantly.
Heating set to 15 degrees and on for 1 hour in morning and 2.5hrs in evening.

Blessed with a wonderfully warm house, and grew up in a freezing house, so used to wrapping up warm at home.

Wear minimum of 3 thermal vests plus polo neck, jumper, cardigan, scarf and body warmer, as normal outfit every day.
2 duvets at night.

Anyway, started my spreadsheet on Thursday and spent £10 total between Thursday- Monday, Gas & Electric. not too bad for 4 people with electric showers, lights in every room and oven, kettle and microwave on every day. Plus devices as 2 of us working from home.

Grumpybutfunny · 24/01/2023 07:37

We haven't had the fire on this weekend as been busy and still not comfortable leaving it unattended. Total for gas and electric (we don't do a cold house) £73.52 we are normally with the fire around £30 for the weekend!!
